Fire destroyed a large building at a major poultry farm in Khon Kaen on Thursday afternoon and killed about 58,000 hens, but the supply of eggs to the market will not be affected.

The fire broke out at SF Khon Kaen Co’s chicken farm in Khon Kaen’s Chum Phrae district around 1.30pm on Thursday, said Pol Capt Withoon Paponngarm, duty officer at Chum Phae police station.

Twelve fire trucks and crews from the district and nearby areas were dispatched to combat the blaze. It took them about two hours to bring the flames under control

Police said the fire gutted coop No 11. The farm has 16 such buildings.

Surasit Suthinreuk, deputy managing director of SF Co, said 58,000 egg-laying hens were burned alive in the coop, which was 15 metres wide and 120 metres long.

Workers caring for the birds and collecting eggs fled in panic when flames erupted from the electrical control panel.

All the workers escaped unhurt, but no one let the chickens out.

The building was completely destroyed by the fire, said Mr Sarasit. Damage was estimated at 40 million baht.

He said despite the huge number of birds killed, it would not affect the supply of eggs to the market.

The farm would still operate as normal after the blaze, which firemen prevented from spreading to the 15 other coops.

Det  Bamrunghong, head of the Khon Kaen mitigation and disaster prevention office’s  Chum Phrae branch, said an electrical short circuit was the likely cause of the fire.
