20-year jail term for 13 Mukdahan reds

The Mukdahan Court on Thursday sentenced 13 red-shirt supporters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship to long jail terms for setting fire to the provincial city hall on May 19 last years, and acquitted 16 others due to lack of evidence.

The prosecution brought criminal charges against 29 people on security-related charges of trespassing on  government property and torching the city hall on May 19, 2010 - the day the UDD called off the anti-government protest at the Ratchaprasong intersection in the heart of Bangkok after it was broken up by troops.

The court found 13 of them guilty as charged and sentenced them each to 20 years imprisonment, and acquitted 16 others for lack of evidence.

The acquitted were released after the verdict was read.

Nisit Sinthuprai, a UDD core member, said seven Pheu Thai MPs would use their parliamentary position as collateral to seek bail for the 13 with cash security of 600,000 baht each.
