OK Thaiga thanks.
I suspect that when the Minister used the words, 'not worth', the context might have been, that that the work that could be done, is sometimes not enough to generate the 'revenue', to pay those wages at Minimum rate. IMO it's best for the State to support Companies in this respect, so that disabled people can get work.
The PC squads are unforgiving and with 24 hour rolling news in the media everywhere and social media running riot, putting a foot in it becomes almost unavoidable. Also IMO there's a bullying undertone to this phenomenum. ATB

RAPE - lynch mobs at the ready again. Ched Evans the footballer has just paid his price to Society by serving half his 5 year sentence for raping a 19 year old Lady in a Hotel room - evidently apart from the rape, there was no additional violence - that is not to excuse the crime, merely to report the point. (Judy Finnegan commented on this). Apparently 150,000 people have signed a petition that Mr Evans should not be allowed to play professional soccer again.
IMHO that is completely wrong. He has paid the price for his crime and will have to live with the stigma of his behaviour forever.
There is another footballer who killed 2 young boys while driving in a seriously drunken state - he has served his prison sentence and I believe he now captains his previous Club.
Social media facilitates hysteria over these matters and IMO it is a phenomenum that is undemocratic and unpleasant.

I think the reaction to what Judy Finnigan said was unbelievable: she was not making any excuses for him, merely asking how society should react when an individual has been through the due process of law (and had to acknowledge and accept their crime) and released. If this individual had not been 'famous' this would not even be a debate. She has been unfairly criticised for asking a reasonable question.

This guy does not seem to be a serial criminal. He committed a crime and has been punished. He will live with this for the rest of his life. The chance of him repeating this is minimal. How many people have been killed by mentally-ill individuals released into society because 'human rights' say they should be? How many serial offenders are identified as a risk but released? Where is the line drawn? Will the critics only be happy if he commits ritual suicide in some public space, and then consider it 'job done'? (I should clarify: I fully agree that the crime he committed was truly criminal and deserving of the punishment in law the judge saw fit to apply. His guilt was proved, and he was sentenced. I am NOT defending this individual: I am defending how society treats offenders who have served their proscribed punishment and are therefore rehabilitated into society).

On the point regarding disability: Thailand already requires companies with 'x' number employees to employ 'y' disabled people: you pay a fine if you don't. We have an excellent Health and Safety person (disabled) working for us. But we would struggle to employ anyone with severe mental/ physical issues given we operate fast machinery. I think this may have been the point the minister wanted to make: you need to balance opportunity with suitability. Marks & Spencer have an excellent record on this, and all credit to them.

Great post CK. Right now a Matthew Syed, is chatting on Sky News - he comes over as very balanced and thoughtful - he comments about Twitter/Social Media as being a new form of 'mob rule'. Britain is SO PC now that there are SO many opportunities to whip up mob rule in this slightly hysterical manner.

(As an aside Ched Evans has been criticised widely throughout for failing to show remorse. He explains that, by saying he was wrongly convicted. He was convicted apparently, on the grounds that the Lady was too drunk, in the Hotel Room, to have given valid consent. Undeniably a difficult scenario to judge IMO).

And the lynch mob has now topped 160,000 !

Good news. The Govt. have said that they are going to bring in measures to address 'baying cyber mobs' and cyber abuse such as that received by the Finnigan family.. (Thaiga's post).
I watched the Lady responsible for the Ched Evans petition talk about her mission - she puts a plausible though IMO flawed case - but it's just inappropriate to tolerate 'cyber lynching'. Crimes and punishment need to be regulated by the Law alone.
As an aside, Evans now apologises but maintains his innocence. Legal moves to fast-track an examination of the possibility of a mis-trial are under way.

Yahoo reports that Puxton Park, Somerset has apparently all banned single men and women from entry to their leisure park, on the grounds that they might be paedophiles. Absolutely shocking. Mooted that this is in common with other parks.
IMO this is shameful and suggests all singles are suspected of being paedophiles !! I hope this imposition is challenged in the Courts.
The PC bonkers brigade would be better directing their attention to the administration of childcare in Rotherham and many other places........

I've heard children must be accompanied by adults, but adults must be accompanied by children. :uhm

Matthew Richards (pictured), 54, from High Littleton, Somerset, was turned away from Puxton Park by bosses despite visiting the centre just days earlier with his three grandchildren.

Re: PC Britain - Sheffield United and Ched Evans
« Reply #68 on: November 21, 2014, 06:20:52 AM »
Well I see the PC lynch mobs have had their way with Mr Evans.
(The unfortunate Judy Finnegan unwittingly brought this topic to the fore, herself being attacked when she described the Ched Evans rape as being 'not violent'. Rape in itself is always an act of violence of course but JF was pointing out that there was no accompanying 'assault and battery' and that IS a relevant point about the offence).
Ched Evans is still claiming to be innocent and is trying to bring another appeal - he has therefore not issued an apology to the 'victim', again to the ire of the mob.
Sheffield United have caved in and will not allow Ched Evans even to train and it seems he will not be playing again, for them at least. Shame on them - what a gutless reaction. It seems no one can stand up to the mob.
The Man has been convicted and has served his sentence - what about the important quality of forgiveness? I note again that another young Footballer who killed two young boys in a disgraceful drink driving incident, is playing (and captaining) his previous Club after serving his sentence - they're made of stronger stuff in Plymouth obviously.
Media hype, 24 hour coverage and social media feed this hysteria.
Those who wish to 'bully' a point know how to feed the mob.

Today Ched Evans is being referred to regularly on TV in a gratuitous manner as a 'convicted rapist' - the monstrous Charlie Webster ex-patron of Sheffield United and by chance a Sky TV reporter, seems in charge of a vindictive winding up process.
This is out and out bullying IMO. Even the PM has weighed in with his support - I'd rather he and the other Leaders supported some forgiveness and despised this trend of public flogging !
Criticism of Evans for not apologising to the victim might be - because he still claims he is innocent.
Dave Whelan and Malky MacKay from the football world also targeted today and a Shadow Minister has been
forced to resign after a 'tweet'.
It is just amazing and appalling. PC Britain in a frenzy of sanctimonious and self-righteous fury !
Just suppose the Lad were to hurt himself as a result of all this pressure - will that appease the bullies ?

Hello Dawn and it would be good to hear the views of a Lady on all this - not many Ladies on KF !
I've had a look at the websites about the Ched Evans case and it looks to me to have been a very harsh conviction.
IMO the behaviour of CE (and Donaldson his friend) was pretty 'laddish' and sordid but not rape.
But the bullies in the media and twitter, must have their fun.
If you have time I'd welcome your views.

OOOH! a lady you have a way with words. ;) haven't read much about it roger, but sounds a bit sordid,or a good night out gone wrong.

He had served half of a five-year jail sentence for raping a woman in a hotel room in Rhyl in 2011.

The court heard that Mr McDonald met the woman and took her back to the hotel room, sending a text to Evans stating he had "got a bird".
During Evans' evidence, he told the jury he had gone to the hotel, let himself in to Mr McDonald's room and watched his friend and the woman having sex.an "associate" of the footballers, and Ryan Roberts, Evans' brother, watched through a window.
     CHARMING! I MUST SAY!

Well Dawn thanks for the reply.
As you say - ALL in the best possible taste ! Not. Sordid and I'm sure this never happens in Thailand.
However, the fact should not be ignored that shortly before the events you mention, Mr Evans was feeding chips to seagulls on the sea front. Sad all round.
You are spot on with the Stanley Matthews comment.
Have a look at the 'defence' website if you have time.

Reminded of TT's first words on this thread - to the effect that 'it is amazing what will offend UK sensibilities these days'. An understatement. The UK is PC bonkers and run by overpaid Jobsworths !

Apparently, Stoke on Trent and a number of other Local Authorities, have changed the wording of CHRISTMAS celebrations to give matters a SEASONAL accent - not wishing to mention the word 'Christ' at all, for fear of offending other religions - Muslims I guess. This is just bloody bizarre !

Other religions are welcomed by most UK citizens with an open spirit, to our Society which has a clear Christian history. Could we imagine Muslims refraining from references to Muhammad or say the Koran at times of muslim festivals and would Christians be offended anyway ?

Nonsense. Just nonsense ! These PC maniacs need a rewire IMHO !

Good point TT. Bad Snowman !
Even worse than that, apparently the legendary Wing Commander Guy Gibson of Dambusters fame, named his Dog - '"negro" (replaced by censor system)'. Shame on him. As the name is also used in the film, should the film be banned ?
From the script just now, a Fellow Officer says to Gibson who is having a beer in the Mess, 'I found "negro" (replaced by censor system) outside, can I get him a beer. Reply, 'Oh yes, as long as it's just one'.
Another reason (cruelty to animals) for this scurrilous film to be banned asap.
I'll finish watching it first though...............

This is clearly sexist and all references should immediately be changed to "snow person".  And as for Father Christmas he is clearly beyond the pale.  As a father he is almost certainly homophobic and his title must be changed to"civil partnershipped person of Christmas".

An old post but worth reading

Britain Ruled by Political Correctness

Nine Muslim men were found guilty of raping dozens of British children. The three month trial revealed that police and social workers had repeatedly refused to investigate; they were afraid of being called racist.

A three-month trial that recently ended in Liverpool, where nine Muslim men were found guilty of raping dozens of British children, revealed that police and social workers in northern England repeatedly refuse to investigate Muslim paedophile gangs: they said they are afraid of being called racist.

The disturbing details that emerged during the trial have opened yet another chapter in a long-running debate about multiculturalism in Britain, where many say that political correctness has gone too far.

Less than a month after the trial in Liverpool ended on May 9, it emerged that social workers in the City of Rotherham, also in northern England, had known for six years that a teenage mother (identified as Child S) who was murdered for bringing shame on the families of two Pakistani men who had used her for sex, was at clear risk from predatory Muslim gangs.

On May 29, Rotherham Council's Safeguarding Children Board published a so-called Serious Case Review, but key politically incorrect passages which reveal that they had known she was at particular risk from "Asian men" (Muslim men) were blocked out with black lines.

The council went to court in an attempt to suppress the hidden information after an uncensored copy of the report was leaked to a British newspaper, but the legal action was eventually abandoned. The uncensored report confirmed that Child S had pursued dealings with 15 different agencies, and identified "numerous missed opportunities" to protect her; observers believe the agencies failed to do so because they did not want to be branded as racist.

Other cases of political correctness abound in Britain, where the enforcement of multiculturalism is endangering the exercise of free speech, threatening public order and undermining British culture.

In Leicester, a gang of Somali Muslim women, who assaulted and nearly killed a non-Muslim passer-by in the city center, walked free after a politically correct judge decided that as Muslims, the women were "not used to being drunk."

In London, two Muslims, who laughed as they repeatedly raped a 24-year-old woman, had their sentences slashed after politically correct judges at an appeals court ruled that the men were not "dangerous."

In Wiltshire, police pulled over an 18-year-old driver for a routine spot check. The driver was stunned when a police officer ordered him to remove the Flag of England from his car; apparently they said the flag could be deemed racist and offensive to Muslim immigrants. The driver thought the officer was joking until he was threatened with a £30 fine if he refused to remove it from view. Tory MP Philip Davies, who campaigns against political correctness, said: "How on earth can it be racist to fly your own flag in your own country?"

In Southampton, a racism row broke out after taxi passengers complained that foreign drivers could not understand English. A group of drivers responded by placing stickers in their taxis with the Flag of England, reading "English Speaking Driver" (photo here). The signs, however, were branded as "racist and offensive" by Town Hall officials, who threatened to strip the drivers of their operating license -- and their livelihood -- if they refused to remove them.

In Manchester, a 14-year-old girl was arrested by police for racism after refusing to sit with a group of five Asian students who did not speak English. The incident happened after the girl asked her teacher if she could switch groups because the Asian students were talking in Urdu, a language she did not understand. The teacher apparently responded by shouting at her, "It's racist, you're going to get done by the police." After being fingerprinted and photographed, the girl was forced to spend three-and-a-half hours in a police cell on suspicion of committing a "section five racial public order offense."

In Irlam, Greater Manchester, a ten-year-old boy was brought before a court for allegedly calling an 11-year-old mixed-race pupil a "Paki" and "Bin Laden" in a playground argument at a primary school. When the case came before District Judge Jonathan Finestein, he said: "Have we really got to the stage where we are prosecuting 10-year-old boys because of political correctness? There are major crimes out there and the police don't bother to prosecute." Finestein also said the decision to prosecute, which cost taxpayers £25,000 in legal fees, showed "how stupid the whole system is getting."

In London, social workers have been accused of "misguided political correctness" after they considered sending a boy in their care to the Democratic Republic of Congo for an exorcism. Officials at Islington Council in north London considered sending the African boy to the Congo when his mother claimed he was possessed by evil spirits and needed "deliverance." City officials paid Dr. Richard Hoskins, an expert in African religion, over £4,000 to travel to Africa to investigate the possibility of an exorcism; evidently they were worried the family's "sensibilities might be affected." Hoskins completed the trip and advised the council against have the boy exorcised because the rituals can be "violent...deeply disturbing and traumatizing."

In Kent, a Christian doctor is fighting for his job after he told a suicidal patient that Christianity may offer help. According to the doctor, "The man was depressed, and had left his own faith. So I told him, 'You may find that Christianity offers you something that your own faith did not.'" The General Medical Council (GMC), which regulates standards among medical professionals, issued the doctor a warning, claiming he had "overstepped the line." The GMC, which allows doctors to promote the healing effects of homoeopathy, chiropractic and reiki, also known as palm healing -- all of which are unsupported by Western, evidence-based medicine but are backed by belief systems -- has banned the mention of faith and prayer in a consultation.

The British Navy, which has been forced to downsize its fleet due to military budget cuts, was obliged by diktats of political correctness to install a special Satanist chapel onboard one of its warships to accommodate the religious requirements of a Satanist crewman.

In London, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) -- a key promoter of multiculturalism -- recently announced that it would drop the terms BC (Before Christ) and AD (which translates from the Latin "Anno Domini" to " in the year of our Lord") and replaced them with the "religiously-neutral" Before the Common Era, BCE, and Common Era, CE. The BBC justified its move this way: "As the BBC is committed to impartiality it is appropriate that we use terms that do not offend or alienate non-Christians."

Anglican Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali, who resigned as the Bishop of Rochester amid death threats from Muslim extremists in Britain, says the BBC's move "amounts to the dumbing down of the Christian basis of our culture, language and history."

The BBC has also refused to broadcast a screenplay about the threat that Islam poses to freedom of speech. The BBC's director general, Mark Thompson, said he would not air a play the National Theatre called "Can We Talk About This?" which examines multiculturalism and how it has resulted in Britain being more divided than ever.

According to Thompson, there is "a growing nervousness about discussion about Islam." He also claims that because Muslims are a religious minority in Britain, their faith should be given different coverage than that of more established groups.

In 2005, Thompson famously ordered BBC Two to air an anti-Christian musical called "Jerry Springer: The Opera," which mocked God and presented Jesus Christ as a homosexual. At least 45,000 people contacted the BBC to complain about the show, which contained an estimated 8,000 obscenities. According to one observer: "If this show portrayed Mohammed or Vishnu as homosexual, ridiculous and ineffectual, it would never have seen the light of day."

How Political Correctness Is Transforming British Education

British teachers are also reluctant to discuss the medieval Crusades, in which Christians fought Muslim armies for control of Jerusalem: lessons often contradict what is taught in local mosques.

In Cheshire, two students at the Alsager High School were punished by their teacher for refusing to pray to Allah as part of their religious education class.

In Scotland, 30 non-Muslim children from the Parkview Primary School recently were required to visit the Bait ur Rehman Ahmadiyya mosque in the Yorkhill district of Glasgow (videos here and here). At the mosque, the children were instructed to recite the shahada, the Muslim declaration of faith which states: "There is no god but Allah and Mohammed is his messenger." Muslims are also demanding that Islamic preachers be sent to every school in Scotland to teach children about Islam, ostensibly in an effort to end negative attitudes about Muslims.

British schools are increasingly dropping the Jewish Holocaust from history lessons to avoid offending Muslim pupils, according to a report entitled, Teaching Emotive and Controversial History, commissioned by the Department for Education and Skills.

British teachers are also reluctant to discuss the medieval Crusades, in which Christians fought Muslim armies for control of Jerusalem: lessons often contradict what is taught in local mosques.

In an effort to counter "Islamophobia" in British schools, teachers now are required to teach "key Muslim contributions such as Algebra and the number zero" in math and science courses, even though the concept of zero originated in India.

In the East London district of Tower Hamlets, four Muslims were recently jailed for attacking a local white teacher who gave religious studies lessons to Muslim girls; and 85 out of 90 schools have implemented "no pork" policies.

Schools across Britain are, in fact, increasingly banning pork from lunch menus to avoid offending Muslim students. Hundreds of schools have adopted a "no pork" policy, according to a recent report by the London-based Daily Telegraph.

The culinary restrictions join a long list of politically correct changes that gradually are bringing hundreds of British primary and secondary education into conformity with Islamic Sharia law.

The London Borough of Haringey, a heavily Muslim district in North London, is the latest school district to switch to a menu that is fully halal (religiously permissible for Muslims).

The Haringey Town Council recently issued "best practice" advice to all schools in its area to "ban all pork products in order to cater for the needs of staff and pupils who are not permitted contact with these for religious reasons."

Local politicians have criticized the new policy as pandering to Muslims, and local farmers, who have pointed out that all schools in Britain already offer vegetarian options, have accused school administrators of depriving non-Muslim children of a choice.

Following an outcry from non-Muslim parents, the town council removed the guidance from its website, although the new policy remains in place.

At the Cypress Junior School, in Croydon, south London, school administrators announced in the school newsletter dated June 1, 2012 that the school has opted for a pork-free menu "as a result of pupil and parental feedback."

The announcement states: "Whilst beef, chicken, turkey and fish will all feature, as well as the daily vegetarian and jacket potato or pasta option, the sausages served will now be chicken rather than pork."

In Luton, an industrial city some 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of London where more than 15% of the population is now Muslim, 23 out of 57 schools have banned pork.

In the City of Bradford, a borough of West Yorkshire in Northern England where there are now twice as many practicing Muslims that there are practicing Anglicans, 24 out of 160 schools have eliminated pork from their menus. In Newham (East London), 25 out of 75 schools have banned pork.

Other pork-free schools include Cranford Park Primary School in Hayes (Middlesex), and Dog Kennel Hill Primary in East Dulwich (South London).

The Borough of Harrow in northwest London was among the first in Britain to encourage halal menus. In 2010, Harrow Council announced plans to ban pork in the borough's 52 state primary schools, following a switch by ten secondary schools to offer halal-only menus.

According to the UK-based National Pig Association, which represents commercial pork producers, "It is disappointing that schools cannot be sufficiently organized to give children a choice of meat. Sausages and roast pork are staples of a British diet and children enjoy eating them. If products can be labeled with warnings that they contain nuts and vegetarian dishes can be made and kept separate from meat dishes, [we] don't see why the same can't apply to pork."

Lunch menus are not the only area in which "cultural sensitivity" is escalating in British schools.

In West Yorkshire, the Park Road Junior Infant and Nursery School in Batley has banned stories featuring pigs, including "The Three Little Pigs," in case they offend Muslim children.

In Nottingham, the Greenwood Primary School cancelled a Christmas nativity play; it interfered with the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha. In Scarborough, the Yorkshire Coast College removed the words Christmas and Easter from their calendar not to offend Muslims.

Also in Cheshire, a 14-year-old Roman Catholic girl who attends Ellesmere Port Catholic High School was branded a truant by teachers for refusing to dress like a Muslim and visit a mosque.

In Stoke-on-Trent, schools have been ordered to rearrange exams, cancel swimming lessons and stop sex education during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. In Norwich, the Knowland Grove Community First School has axed the traditional Christmas play to "look at some of the other great cultural festivals of the world."

Meanwhile, the politically correct ban on pigs in Britain also extends to toys for children. A toy farm set called HappyLand Goosefeather Farm recently removed pigs in order to avoid offending Muslims.

The pig removal came to public attention after a British mother bought the toy as a present for her daughter's first birthday. Although the set contained a model of a cow, sheep, chicken, horse and dog, there was no pig, despite there being a sty and a button which generated an "oink" sound.

After the mother complained, the Early Learning Centre (ELC), which manufactures the toy, responded: "Previously the pig was part of the Goosefeather Farm. However due to customer feedback and religious reasons this is no longer part of the farm."

After a public outcry, however, ELC later reversed its decision: "We recognize that pigs are familiar farm animals, especially for our UK customers. We have taken the decision to reinstate the pig and to no longer sell the set in international markets where it might create an issue."

Hi Dave yes I saw the post. The USA I think led the way with the litigious society and some of the pay offs are quite ludicrous IMO. Now the UK too is bedeviled in this respect.
IMO kids have to be allowed to take some risks but with some eye for safety. Removing diving boards from swimming pools as mentioned, is generally another nonsense.
