Cameron: UK won't pay £1.7bn EU bill

David Cameron has angrily insisted the UK will not pay £1.7bn being demanded by the European Union.

"If people think I am paying that bill on 1 December, they have another think coming," the prime minister said in Brussels. "It is not going to happen."

Demand for an extra £1.7bn is 'completely unacceptable'

But Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said the demand should "not have come as a surprise" to the UK.

He said it was made under a system agreed by all the member states and based on data provided by them.

EU finance ministers have agreed to the UK's request for emergency talks about the top-up payment, which would add about a fifth to the UK's net EU contribution of £8.6bn for this year.

Best we wait and see what happens in December.

Cameron is a spinless wa**er.

About time he grew a pair and told Europe to go forth

Hey DD that's a bit scathing to say the least.  Could you do his very difficult job - balancing all the competing interests so that you retain the power to do anything at all ? Leaders jobs are more difficult than ever in these days of 24 hour surveillance and 24 hour news coverage. I'm not Tory but I have some respect for him and think he is the best leader we have atm. Just my opinion.
You are also wrong - he is not spinless - spins quite a lot actually. Admittedly doesn't spin as much as Bliar did - but spin he does ?
When I heard his statement that he would not pay on Dec 1st, I wondered if he means to delay it to Dec 2nd ?
I also heard the suggestion that the penalty for not paying at all will be Euro 200 million - seems like a good deal to me. ATB

No i couldnt do his job is the honest truth.

But his recent stance against Europe is due to the kicking he got in the local elections by UKIP.
Who i voted for but dont think they are a credible party to run the country.

But i think you are right he will just pussyfoot around and pay the fine late. If you are right and the fine is only 200 million euros i know what i would do.

It woke the main parties up and now they are learning that Europe is a big issue for the British people.

Bye bye Europe, and the quicker the better imo.

Then the Scottish will have another referendum, so they can join Europe on their own again!

Come on, England has lots of "collector's items" it can sell to nostalgic Americans to raise some pennies like bridges, castles, palaces etc.

Yesterday a Report released by Lord Ashcroft revealed that 30% of Labour voters would prefer David Cameron as Prime Minister ! Me too. Europe is offering NO help to DC in the face of UKIP popularity.
Ed Milliband is in serious difficulty with personal ratings and with the changing politics of Scotland.
Labour as the main opposition should be in pole position for the 2015 election coming - interesting times.

Roger, I was surprised by your David Cameron remark.  You feeling OK?  There is a distinct possibility that, after the next election, Britain will be governed by a Labour/SNP coalition.  That should definitely kick off an English Revolution!

Hello TT. Although a bit left myself I do think DC is quite a class act - compared to the other party leaders.
(Reply 2). A Labour/SNP Coalition - maybe if such a nonsense emerges there may be a push for proportional representation again. One things for sure - it's a real muddle atm. Interesting times.

With 3 weeks left to go a Labour/SNP stitch-up now looks an odds on certainty.  Labour say it will not form a coalition with SNP but in practice it will be something far worse:- an informal deal behind closed doors.  Get all of your GBP out of the country now!

Guido has  an interesting video of the next Prime Minister:-  http://order-order.com/#_@/K0jMYos3VRW_lA
