Pathum Thani hit by condom deluge

PATHUM THANI — Residents of Thanyaburi district fear a possible health risk after thousands of condoms, which they do not know are new or used, fell from a car and scattered across the road over the past week. They say city workers will not clean up the mess.

The condoms of many colours were still highly visible on Thursday along Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok Road and Khlong 3 bridge near Chok Chai International school in tambon Buang Yee Thow after locals spotted them more than a week ago.

They want Khlong 3 Tambon Municipality and Buang Yee Thow Tambon Municipality, which supervise the area, to urgently clear the mysterious condoms away and launch a probe to find out who dropped them and whether it was intentional. They fear the condoms may cause disease as they have no idea if the materials are used or brand new. They condom piles also had a smelly “plastic” odour, they said.

A witness said a large black garbage bag fell from a car one day last week and two other cars following it ran over it and ripped it open, sending countless condoms across the road. Passing cars blew them away to the pavement and closer to people’s homes. But garbage collectors had not swept them up and had left them there until today, the witness said.

Almost half of the unbranded condoms were destroyed in the fire. They came in different colours and colours and thought to be counterfeight merchandise infringing on copyrights, Bang Ban police investigator Supoj Pengsawarng said. A couple of the prophylactics were packaged with the brand name "New-Silk".

New Silk-brand condoms are manufactured by Okamoto Industries of Japan. The company operates an office Pathum Thani.

Pol Lt Col Supoj said witnesses had seen an Isuzu pickup truck being driven into the field shortly before the fire was reported.

Wicha Jaikla, mayor of tambon Maha Brahma municipality, said a legal representative had filed a complaint with local police against the offenders for dumping "hazardous waste" without permission. The condoms were cleared from the field and would be eradicated in the pollution-free incineration process, he added.

Condoms intended for recycling, owner claims

Naput Mentong told police that she had bought poor-quality new condoms from a factory at the Navanakorn Industrial Estate in Pathum Thani. She deposited the condoms on her own land plot almost a year ago and was planning to sell them to a recycling factory in Samut Sakhon.

Naput said that she bought condoms for Bt30,000 and asked police to look for people who burned the condoms.

The presence of the condoms on the land made headlines.

While not disputing that the land is the property of the woman, Tambon Mahapram Municipality nevertheless filed a police complaint against owner of the condoms for allegedly moving items considered dangerous rubbish to the plot without permission.

The municipality initially planned to destroy the condoms in an incinerator in Bang Pa-in Industrial Estate.

Matichon reported that police charged Napat for storing hazardous waste without license.
