Pray for Pattaya, Really?

A few expats in Pattaya have recently coined a phrase across social networks that has hitherto been reserved for cities having experienced a terrorist attack; this in relation to what they cite as the fall away of Pattaya of old – citing empty restaurants and bars as being a shadow of their former glory days.  They claim that Pattaya is not what it once was, and for that we must ‘pray for pattaya’.

On face value I can understand, although not agree, with their positions. Tourism in Pattaya is up, but for most business tourism is down. You see although the streets may be heaving with Chinese tour buses and locations like Bali Hai look more like the Beijing in rush hour than a seaside pier, business do not get a slice of this Chinese Yuan Currency coming in to the country – this reserved strictly for the tour operators and their cliché.

Traditional leisure operations designed originally for the Western single male tourist are feeling the pinch – but isn’t the truth that they have been feeling this pinch year on year ever since the pound crashed against the baht in 2008 – with the Brits losing almost 30% on their exchange rate from 72 baht to 52 baht per 100 baht. Anyone retired here in Thailand became 30% poorer practically overnight.

And then the Russian arrived in mass and Pattaya started to see couples and families holidaying in a resort previously reserved for older, single white males wanting nothing more than to drink, party, pick up women. – And for some at least, play golf.  The changes in Pattaya were already beginning.

The Russian market energised the property with even lower end Russians dreaming of a holiday home abroad buying into the Pattaya dream…and then the Ruble crashed and these Russians dreams were shattered, with many unable to make final payments on their off plans units. And just like that, Pattaya had a glut of new property needed selling to complete the projects.

Pattaya,l ike Thailand actually, consistently has boom and busts, but each time shows great bouncebackability…and after the Russians the saviours were the Chinese.

Speaking to many realtors and developers that have tapped in to this market, they believe the Chinese property buyer has another 5 years of boom left.

So parking these global changes that impacted on Pattaya evolving, take a look a little closer at what has been going on in the bars, or for that matter what hasn’t.

Bar girls found mobile phones – they found Badoo, Tinder and even Facebook to meet guys – and that changed the whole landscape for beer bars. Guys in the bars were no longer needed like they were before – and that was crushing. The single males Pattaya Disneyland was being dismantled, and being done so very quickly.

Maybe others should not be saying ‘Pray for Pattaya’ but ‘Rejoice in New Pattaya’ – and place you can now have a family and bring your kids to for a holiday.  Pattaya has so much to offer now, and any nay-sayer who disses Pattaya just hasn’t scraped the surface and their opinions should be discarded.

A cleaner Pattaya that can now tap into the forecasted 50 million tourists that analysts say will be visiting Thailand by 2030, up massively on the already record breaking 30m + tourists already visiting this great country.

Does Pattaya want a piece of this pie? Absolutely – the future is very rosy if it offers the right proposition to this new breed of tourists gracing our shores.

We can live in the past and stagnate or we can jump on board – unfortunately the one constant in life is change so embrace the future and be part of it, or fall by the side.

Are Pattaya Expats Really Expats?

Lets consider the facts on being an ‘expat’

For all us expats living in Pattaya have you ever stopped to think how much we have really changed our lives by becoming an expat in Pattaya?

My life seven years ago was based in the UK and I was very much part of the rat race on my daily commute into London, and I can only describe it as predictable and comfortable; I liked my life but knew I wanted more.

What exactly happens in our minds that one day we decide not only to break the norm but up sticks and move to Pattaya, Thailand? We all, as expats, share that one trait that we have taken the decision to come and live abroad; however different we all are – we share that one bond. But are we really that different from our fellow compatriots still living in our domestic countries?

When I made this move I remember the feeling of empowerment and control, I had well and truly broken the grasp of societies noose and escaped to a new country, with minimal concerns about the financial implications. It was as liberating as it was satisfying to realize we can all make decisions irrespective of the pressures from society trying to stop you, such as mortgages, jobs and families.

But, was it really that bold? As I sit back in my leather chair at my desk in my office, with all the comforts I would have had back in the UK, I have to beg the question – have I really become an expat and become different for the experience or am I merely an English man residing in another country? And yes I think there is a difference, as I think the big step we all make from our home countries is not really as big as we think.

Let’s put it another way. Do you watch Thai Television? (Of course you don’t), Do you still enjoy food from your home country, like the odd fried breakfast or burger on the BBQ? Who do you socialize with, I bet 9 times out of 10 its people from your own country rather than elsewhere? We relocate but we don’t change; so have we really broken the norms of our life before?

Speaking to a fellow English expat he admits he likes it when it rains in town and thinks it is because, in some small way, it’s a creature ‘comfort’ from back home; and I have to admit somewhere in his wisdom I think he has a point.
Arguably being an expat in Pattaya – with all that Pattaya has to offer – is the easiest step anyone can make moving from their home country. The city is awash with fellow expats and tourists, and in many Sois I see a greater ratio of foreigners to Thais. That’s pretty startling.

Let’s not finish on what could be construed as a negative point, as it’s not meant to be. We have been able to become expats in Pattaya with minimal disruption to how we are used to living our lives. We can eat, drink and socialize the same; only in Pattaya it’s just that much better than how we remember it used when we lived in our home countries. But, our bold moves to relocate to Pattaya probably aren’t as bold as some of us might think.

Walking Street more like Hell Zone than Happy Zone as man attacked

Walking Street in Pattaya is more like Hell Zone a week before the area is officially designated as the resort’s first “Happy Zone”.

The observation comes after the experience of a Thai/ Indian man who was beaten up and threatened with being shot and thrown in the sea by bouncers at a discotheque in the famed South Pattaya street.

Dipak Kumar Tiwaree, 30 said he was at the Nasa Discotheque on Thursday evening. He had been taking some pictures with his mobile phone when the bouncers led him out back of the disco. Dipak said the Indian owner also was there.

“I was asked, Who are you working for?” I said I was not working for anyone, I was just having a night out”, he said at Pattaya police station on Friday.

He claimed that one man got out a gun and stuck it in his ribs saying that he could easily shoot him and throw him in the sea – no one would know.

He was then physically attacked by ten bouncers, he claimed, and tossed outside where the guards told police he had been making trouble inside.

He said that police at the scene did not lift a finger to help him. Despite being in some distress he was not even given first aid or a drink.

Later at the police station on Thursday night he came face to face with his tormenters again. When police stepped out of the investigation room he was left alone with them – one made the sign of a gun with his fingers and pointed at him.

Nothing was resolved.

So later on Friday Dipak went back to register a formal complaint. He had facial bruising and a wound on his forehead and bruises all over his body, he said.

Police said they would get everyone together again to come to a just settlement for all sides

Top brass police are due in Walking Street next Saturday to declare the entertainment area a “Happy Zone” where tourists will be safe from trouble.

Prostitutes what prostitutes pt (2)

British newspapers The Sun and the Daily Mirror recently ran articles describing Pattaya as "the world's sex capital" and as a "modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah", sparking anger among government officials, especially PM Prayut. He has vowed to crack down on illegal businesses and prostitution in Pattaya, viewing them as a major embarrassment for Thailand.

On Tuesday, Pattaya City officials, local police units and administrative units of Chon Buri held a press conference on the new policy, Pattaya Happy Zone, which has been immediately implemented with the main purpose of keeping popular areas of Pattaya under control and crime-free.

The Happy Zone is being enforced in the infamous Walking Street in order to control all illegal activities to make sure that the holiday experience in Pattaya is hassle-free for everyone.

Pol Col Apichai Krobpetch, the Pattaya police superintendent, told Spectrum that Pattaya is not a hub for the sex trade. He was upset about the British media's stories, insisting they were fabricated.

"There is no such thing as prostitution in Pattaya," says Col Apichai. "Where did they get the figure of 27,000 sex workers in Pattaya? Anyone can make up this information.

"We are working very hard to keep these issues under control. We patrol every night to make sure that there are no sex workers on the streets. We make sure that all the bars follow the law and we keep our eyes on every entertainment venue and beer bar.

"Thai ladies having sex with foreigners is their personal issue. If they like each other, I don't see anything wrong with what they do behind closed doors.

"As the police chief in charge of this area, I can guarantee that Pattaya is still a safe and beautiful place to visit."

NICE LITTLE EARNER FOR THE COPS

While the police are defending Pattaya as a safe and clean place, social worker Surang Janyam, the director of Service Workers IN Group Foundation, suggests we should stop fooling ourselves that prostitution does not exist in Thailand and start thinking about ways to include sex workers as part of society and as human beings with dignity.

"We can't close our eyes and pretend that there are no sex workers in Thailand. The estimated number published in the Daily Mirror is totally inaccurate -- 27,000 sex workers in Pattaya is way too low. We have a lot more sex workers than that. However, the actual number is not the real issue," Ms Surang says.

"We have to think what we can do to improve their lives and well-being. Cracking down on prostitution and arresting sex workers won't solve the problem as they will end up having no job and no money. Meanwhile, the real issue is not them selling themselves for money. The real issue is that the government doesn't do anything to improve the dire economic situation that forces many people into this seedy business.

"Forget about legalising prostitution. How about decriminalising it altogether and bringing sex workers under the labour law? That way they can at least get some social welfare and get the same treatment each human deserves."

Chantawipa Apisuk, director of the Empower Foundation who has been working on the issue for more than 30 years, says there have been many attempts to solve the problem but none has been successful.

She suggests that instead of cracking down and banning the sex trade, the government should reach out to sex workers and ask them what they want. Then the two sides can meet halfway in order to keep everything under control.

While prostitution remains a never-ending issue, Ms Chantawipa worries that the legalisation or decriminalisation of prostitution may not be happen in her lifetime because there is a bigger issue behind it.

"Prostitution in Thailand is all about bribery. Owners of each venue must bribe the police to keep their business going. If prostitution becomes legal, how else will the cops make money? Don't forget that a big part of our income also stems from this type of business," says Ms Chantawipa.

"The police only crack down when they have to compile human trafficking reports. With the way our country is run, I doubt this issue will ever be solved."

Ning fully agrees with the legalisation of prostitution but her main concern is that sex workers will be labelled and stigmatised further.

"Legally registering as a sex worker means they also accept their status selling sex for living. Thais have a negative attitude towards this type of work even though many people earn a living this way," says Ning.

"I have many friends still in the sex trade. They are abused, they get injured and some have died from getting beaten up. We are too afraid to file a report with the police since what we do is not legal. We should be protected under the same law no matter what we do."

No sex please, we're Thai  pt (1)

With the police denying prostitution exists in Pattaya, activists say there's little chance of the sex trade being decriminalised

t started off as nothing more than a small fishing village on the Gulf of Thailand. Its long sweeping bay was dotted with a few boats and shacks where the villagers lived. Then a group of 500 American soldiers stationed at a military base in Nakhon Ratchasima were driven to Pattaya on June 29, 1959, for a week of rest and relaxation (R&R). They rented several houses at the southern end of the beach from a prominent local, Luang Sunthorn, thus opening a Pandora's box for this sleepy fishing village.

Word spread among American soldiers stationed in the region and Pattaya quickly become a hot alternative destination to the concrete sprawl of Bangkok. GIs had put Pattaya on the map as the best beach destination to unwind and indulge.

When large numbers of troops began to arrive at the neighbouring Baan Sattahip air base, now known as U-tapao airport, things really started to pick up in Pattaya. After almost half a century, Pattaya has transformed itself from a getaway destination for international soldiers during the Vietnam War to Thailand's best-known red light district among sex tourists from every corner of the world.

KEEPING THE GI SPIRIT ALIVE

The Thai and the US governments signed an agreement to provide R&R facilities in Thailand during the Vietnam War. In 1964, GIs started to arrive in U-tapao, the first US army base not far from Pattaya's beach area.

From then on until 1976, about 700,000 international soldiers were sent for R&R each year, spending one week in Thailand to party.

Women selling sex for a living is nothing new to Thai society. In 1680 during the Ayutthaya period, prostitution was fully legal and there were even state-run brothels. The skin trade was largely confined to the Bangkok area. But as soon as international soldiers started to descend on Pattaya, it became the new destination for sex workers to expand their customer base.

Sex workers adapted to the new customers, learning about exchange rates, rock and roll and the various army ranks as well as picking up the slang. They were providing services to young soldiers, some traumatised by war, in a rush to enjoy their week off before going back to the war.

When the North Vietnamese won the war in 1975, the fortunes of Pattaya fell into a brief slump. With all the soldiers gone, many of the bars, clubs and sex workers were forced into early retirement, yet the town endured and was reinvigorated by a new wave of hedonistic visitors from near and far.

Pattaya was named a city in 1978 and began to market itself to a broader range of tourists. Although circumstances are different from those in the 1970s, many GIs still head right to the heart of the infamous destination, where things haven't changed that much. After the Vietnam War, many servicemen remained in Pattaya. They married Thai women, opened bars and restaurants and kept the GI spirit alive. Today thousands of American servicemen still come to Pattaya every year to participate in the joint Thai-US military exercise known as Cobra Gold.

PARADISE FOR AGEING LOTHARIOS

For a lonely old American like Matt, it's nearly impossible to find a nice young girl back home in California. But the sexagenarian still hasn't given up hope of finding the next Mrs Right.

After three failed marriages to Western women, Matt stopped looking at white girls because he thought they are not capable of love. He shifted his sights to a more exotic option -- Asian girls. When appearances alone can't win love, Matt realised there's one guaranteed way to catch the perfect lady: money.

Pattaya was the only place he could think of that would fulfil his Asian dream. He made his first trip 10 years ago in the quest to find his true love. But when he arrived, he was very surprised to find how easy it is to find love in Pattaya.

"Love happens every day here. I usually come here for three months a year. I stay in a cheap condo I bought and I can't tell you how many girls I've brought over to my love nest," Matt says proudly.

"I thought I would settle down with a nice Thai lady and have a warm loving family together, but the ladies here are not wife material. It's all about the money for them. I used to date a much younger lady and she always asked for money. She said I had to send her money every month, buy her a house and send her kid to school. If that's what love is here in Pattaya, I don't want it. Why bother when I can get someone new every day?"

"Good guys go to Heaven, bad guys go to Pattaya" -- the expression appears to be the slogan of Pattaya City. The motto may reek of sarcasm but it confirms the mindset of many tourists who come to Pattaya just for sexual shenanigans.

"I come here every year to relax and, of course, to meet young and beautiful ladies. When I first came here five years ago, I picked up a lot of girls from bars, but nowadays I can pick up girls anywhere and any time," boasts a 58-year-old Danish man who wished to remain anonymous.

RAKING IN THE BAHT

Supin, a 28-year-old sex worker from Surin province in the Northeast, came to Pattaya when she was 21 at the suggestion of a friend. Needing to raise money to send her children to school, Supin decided to leave home and earn some money.

She went to Bangkok a year prior to Pattaya to work in a restaurant as a waitress where she earned 280 baht a day plus tips. But the money was never enough to feed her whole family after her Thai husband left her with two children, making her the main breadwinner.

When her friend suggested she could earn more money in Pattaya, Supin didn't think of anything else but her family. She was fully aware of what that might involve, but she was willing to do anything to bring in much-needed cash.

"I first came here to work in a beer bar. I only served drinks at that time until some customers offered me for money for sex. When I first earned 2,000 baht in one day instead of 280 baht, I realised I could actually do this for a living," Supin says.

Thanadda "Ning" Swangnetr, a 48-year-old activist and public figure who gained fame with an award-winning book exposing her life as a sex worker, told Spectrum that what forced her into prostitution when she was 18 was financial problems.

"I had a kid when I was very young from unprotected sex. I needed a lot of money to raise my child. But I only graduated high school and I had no skills. I ended up with a low-paid job earning 3,500 baht a month in Bangkok. Then a friend told me I could earn 5,000 baht a month working in a bar serving drinks in Pattaya. I decided to go since I could earn more money," Ning says.

"When I first arrived, they placed me in a room with a glass window in front. Girls were picked by customers and served them drinks. I didn't get picked for a week and thought this may not be the right job for me. Then a tour guide asked me to spend time with him in his hotel room for 4,000 baht, which was a lot of money in 1985, and I thought this is a lot of money for just one night. I then became hooked on the temptation of the large amount of money I could earn in one day."

Ning thought about quitting many times since selling herself was not something that she could tell everyone about proudly. But at the end of the day, it brought in money to feed her whole family. She occasionally did other jobs, but they never paid as much as being a sex worker.

"I was hooked on the money. I had enough to send back to my family and I even had enough to entertain myself, buy new clothes, go clubbing and actually live my life," Ning says.

Happy Zone’s are the answer to a safer Pattaya says top cop

A Crisis meeting was held by Pattaya police recently addressing the growing concern over tourist safety in and around the area. The solution to the problem, Happy Zones.

The “Happy Zone” idea come from the national police HQ, and will slowly be introduced into tourist cities across Thailand in the near future. Pattaya will be the first to take a shot at the new concept, which police hope will be a success.

“So we have decided to set up ‘Happy Zones'”, said Somprasong. “These will be in tourist towns throughout the country but the project will start in Pattaya first”.

Pattaya image plan: From 'sin city' to family resort

The Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (Dasta) is aiming to strengthen local tourism in Pattaya and improve the city's image among foreign tourists.

Dasta deputy director-general Taweebhong Wichaidit said a plan is in progress to change Pattaya's image from a "sin city" to a family entertainment destination.

Officials are promoting tourism areas such as Baan Chark Ngaew, Takien Tia, Nong Prue, Nong Pla Lai, Huay Yai, Khao Chee Jan and Khao Mai Kaew, all of which offer scenic views of nature.

Tourists in these areas can experience the local lifestyle away from Pattaya's nightlife and beaches in places such as Baan Chark Ngaew, a 100-year-old Chinese community.

Mr Taweebhong said the effort to change Pattaya's image may be difficult, but Dasta will work to promote alternative tourism for Thai and international travellers who want to see authentic local culture and nature.

"We aim to strengthen local communities to generate more tourist revenue within two years, and then they will be stronger in using their assets to present themselves as new tourist attractions," he said.

Dasta is trying to create local tourist attractions and activities and revitalise nature sites to attract both local and foreign travellers.

Baan Chark Ngaew represents Chinese vintage life, while Nong Prue shows a religious and cultural dimension with a mix of Christian, Buddhist and Muslim influences.

Khao Chee Jan is home to 11 royal projects conforming with the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej's sufficiency economy philosophy.

"I strongly believe that Chon Buri's designated areas will offer more dimensions to Thais and international travellers in the future," Mr Taweebhong said.

Dasta always focuses on designated areas to help distribute income to local communities and reduce poverty.

It will let the Tourism Authority of Thailand present the new tourist attractions.

Dasta has worked more than five years to push community-based tourism and aims to distribute tourism revenue to 2,500 districts nationwide in 2017, up from 1,500 districts last year.

why was she arrested,i think the pressure of social media. but some drink and don't realize how much they actually do drink,so the bill seems way over the top.lets hope that something was learned by both sides.

Holiday in patts anyone, free western shootout show to keep you amused  :o This poor guy was caught right in the middle of it with a group of thirty to forty motorcycles gathered around him.

He said he called the police but that nobody came to help or take his statement.

Bombs and gang shootout in Pattaya

At 1.30am, on the morning of November 30, Pattaya police received reports of a shooting and bombing in Pattaya.

Twenty-three-year old Mr Chayin Naebpimai reported to Nongprue police that he had stopped at the side of the road, close to the International School on Route 36, when a group of thirty and forty motorcycles gathered around him.

Some took cover behind his car whilst others began shooting at another group of men on the far side of the road. At one point one threw what appeared to be a home-made bomb which exploded and shattered glass.

Mr Chayin said that he and his friend hurried away quickly but in the panic of the situation he drove straight into a ditch.

He said he called the police but that nobody came to help or take his statement. Eventually some friends appeared and helped to pull the car from the ditch.

Afterwards Mr Chayin says he went to the Nongprue police station to report the incident but it was closed and he had to telephone Pattaya police to make a statement.

As for wandering about after midnight looking for a female or whatever, why not do it earlier in the evening, unless buying the drinks all night puts some off  :o  all that is left in most cases as the night goes on into the early hours of the morning is what nobody else wants, the leftovers. Pattaya has a sleazy, violent reputation, but how safe is it really

Pattaya is definitely quite safe for the average tourist partaking in normal activities.  how and why we come to this firm stance - in spite of the city's sordid reputation. Anyone wandering the streets of Pattaya drunk, or partly pickled by alcohol after midnight, exposes themselves to the first level of danger.

Most vulnerable at this hour is the single male, partly drunk and intent on picking up a girl companion for the night. Predators abound in the dark of this concrete jungle, and like their counterparts in the wild, they seek the weak and vulnerable. Here it's the drunk, the boozy guy seeking ....

Three foreign tourists, one a woman, were attacked and robbed of thousands of baht in two incidents in the Pattaya area, Chon Buri province, early on Friday morning.

Police said the men were from Japan and Sweden, and the woman from Russia.

T----, 41, who was visiting Pattaya for the first time, was knocked down by two Thai men on LK Metro Road about 2.30am.

The Swede, identified only as Stephen, 44, witnessed the attack and tried to help the Japanese, but he was knocked out by a kick to his chin. The Japanese tourist suffered a deep cut in his mouth.

The thugs took about 5,000 baht in cash and ran off with a Thai woman, Mr K---- told police.

Police later arrested two, They denied attacking the tourists. In April last year they were charged with assaulting a British tourist, police said.

The Swede was given first aid at the scene of the robbery and recovered.

About 6am D----, 26, brought 28-year-old Russian L---- to local police. He said he found her walking in tears and seeking help on a side road in the Jomtien area.

She said she had been in Pattaya's Walking Street and hired a taxi motorcycle outside Siam Bayshore Resort to return to her room, but the man instead took her beyond there to the side road, where he snatched her bag containing US$100 and 140 baht in cash, a mobile phone and her documents.

Then the man shoved her on the ground and causing cuts and bruises, before speeding off on his motorcycle.

Police were checking surveillance camera footage in the area to identify the thief, and said they would find out if he was a real taxi motorcyclist, or just pretending.

We have had jokes in the past about soi 6, but this is bad news, being stabbed in the face with a broken bottle. Must of been a sight to see a brawl that appeared to involve around twenty bar girls. The victim said that the suspect was on her first day working at the bar. She had become drunk and pointed her feet at her, for no reason, a sign of disrespect.

pattayaone.net takes up the story

GoGo Girl Stabbed in The Face in Soi 6, Beach Road

At 3am, on the morning of August 23, Pattaya Police were called to a disturbance on Soi 6, Beach Road, Pattaya.

At the scene Sawang Boriboon Medics were treating one injured girl after a savage brawl that appeared to involve around twenty bar girls.

Police officers struggled to control the situation. One girl, twenty-two-year-old Ms Channipa Kukiew, a Go Go Girl, was covered in blood and being treated for serious head injuries. She was rushed to Banglamung Hospital for emergency treatment.

Another girl, twenty-year-old Ms Kannika Mingkwan, a Go Go Girl from the same bar, was holding a broken bottle which was taken as evidence.

The victim said that the suspect was on her first day working at the bar. She had become drunk and pointed her feet at her, for no reason. (a sign of disrespect)

She approached her new work-mate to ask her the problem and a fight broke out. It was broken up by security staff and the two girls arranged to ‘meet outside’ to settle their dispute later.

As the bar was closing the two squared up but the suspect produced a bottle and hit the victim in the face. She then proceeded to stab her in the face and arms ten-times before she could be pulled off.

After questioning the suspect said she had not pointed her feet at all and that the victim must have imagined it.’ She claimed to have been dragged outside by a group of the victims friends and was ‘only defending herself with the bottle.’

She complained she had been ‘bullied all evening.’

She has been held for further questioning.

Teens charged over Pattaya body-under-bed murder

Two teenage boys, one 17 and the other 14, were arrested on Sunday on charges of murdering a transgender woman in a Pattaya hotel and stuffing the body inside a bed frame.

Police apprehended the teens, both from Nakhon Ratchasima, at a bus terminal in Muang Chon Buri district around noon and took them for questioning at Muang Pattaya police station.

The body was found in a room of a five-storey hotel on Soi Buakhao in tambon Nong Phrue of Bang Lamung district on Saturday morning. The hotel alerted police after a maid noticed blood oozing out from underneath the bed accompanied by a foul stench.

The two boys were questioned by investigators and admitted to murdering the transgender women.

Pattaya hotel guests unaware of dead body under bed

Two guests spent a night in a Pattaya hotel unaware that there was a dead body under their bed, according to local reports.

The body of the slain transgender woman was only discovered after the guests had checked out, when a maid noticed blood near the bed.

Pattaya police and rescue workers were alerted to the incident at the five-storey hotel on Soi Buakhao in tambon Nong Phrue of Bang Lamung district around 11.30am on Saturday.

Rescue workers found the unidentified body after lifting up the bed in the room on the roof deck of the hotel. Police believe the victim had been dead for three or four days. The body was sent to a forensic institute for an autopsy to find out the cause of the death.

Thai media reported that two men had checked into the room on Aug 16. They took a transgender guest to the room at 1.35am on Aug 18 before checking out later that morning.

On Friday evening, a man and woman checked into the room and reported a bad smell. They asked the hotel staff to spray the room before spending the night there.

On Saturday morning, a hotel maid came to clean the room, discovered blood coming from under the bed and a foul smell. She alerted the hotel manager, who immediately called police to investigate.

Pol Col Apichai Kropphet, the Pattaya poice chief, said officers had already obtained the identification of the two male suspects and footage from closed-circuit television. He declined to reveal further details.

Police are now looking for the suspects, he said.

Suicide or Murder? Englishman Found Hanging as House Burns Down in Pattaya

At 4am, on the morning of August 1, Huay Yai police station was informed of a suspected suicide and fire at a house on Soi Tessabal Road, next to the Huay Yai Temple, Pattaya.

Of the four house complex the last in the row was ablaze and fire fighters took some time to bring the situation under control.

At the side of the property investigators found the body of a fifty-six-year-old Englishman, hanging from a water tank platform. Rescue teams released the body.

Twenty-nine-year-old step-daughter of the dead man, said that her mother had received a call threatening to kill himself and so she wanted to come and see.

Her mother, she said, did not join her as she was afraid as he regularly ‘beat her up.’

when she arrived she discovered the fire and tried to put it out using buckets of water from the swimming pool, but the blaze was too fierce for her to handle.

She called for the emergency services and then noticed her step-father hanging at the side of the property.

Pol Capt Pornchai has taken photographic evidence and appeared unconvinced by this story as he has confirmed he will investigate the ‘real cause of death’ after the results of an autopsy, carried out at the Police Hospital.

some residents are battling to reclaim the city's former image

How long will they have to go back  :spin

They say the present day bar scene in Pattaya is an indirect spoil of the Vietnam War to which the city lent itself, Things really picked up in Pattaya as UTapao Airport, very close to pattaya was heavily staffed and used by the US Air Force throughout the Vietnam conflict.

The story goes, A group of 500 American soldiers stationed at the military base in Korat were driven to Pattaya on 29th June 1959 for a week of rest and relaxation known as (R&R). They rented several houses at the southern end of the beach from a prominent Thai Lord, making this once sleepy fishing village to what it is today. Despite their short stay, the GIs had a great time and raved about the place. The word spread among other American soldiers stationed in the region and Pattaya quickly became a hot alternative to the seedy side of Bangkok.                                    This vid will take you back a bit.

Must be tough on some girls in pattaya that are nothing to do with the bar scene and get classed as the same, an article in the bangkokpost.com reports some locals say they’ve had enough. Many locals no longer feel safe in their own town. Others feel ashamed to admit where they come from

Pattaya's days as a family retreat have long since given way to the sex game, but some residents are battling to reclaim the city's former image as a clean and safe destination.

In sin city, locals left hoping for a miracle

IMAGE PROBLEM

“I am afraid to tell everyone that I am from Pattaya,” said Taew, 22. “I don’t know what kind of woman other people will think I am once they find out where I live.”

Her concerns are not unfounded. Nan, 32, is a tall, tanned and well-educated businesswoman who was born and raised in Pattaya. Two years ago she was taking a tour in Germany. While she was walking around Berlin, she asked a couple to take a picture of her and her friend.

“Danke,” Nan managed to say in German to thank the couple who had helped her.

“ ‘Where are you from?’ the man asked after he handed the camera back,” Nan recalled. “I told him I am from Pattaya, Thailand. All of a sudden his wife pulled her husband’s arm away and said to me, ‘There is no place for a hooker like you in our country. Go back to where you are from if you want to find customers.’

“I was stunned by the comment, but didn’t say anything back to her. I didn’t realise how bad the image of Pattaya is until that day,” Nan said. From that point on, she always introduced herself as being a Chon Buri resident, being careful to avoid any mention of Pattaya.

‘Crocodile Raft’ Throws Down Gauntlet With Epic Dare to Online Critics

A tycoon whose business involves pushing boatloads of tourists into a pond full of hungry crocodiles issued a hearty challenge Friday to those safety-obsessed naysayers on the internet.

If they come to his attraction and can make the raft sink within five minutes, he will hand over 5 million baht. If it doesn’t, they must publicize the fact online – and accept a free year’s membership to the attraction.

An elephant is used to load-test and demonstrate the nigh unsinkability of a raft Thursday used to float tourists in a pond of hungry crocodiles at Elephant Kingdom southeast of Bangkok in Chonburi province.

“If you get together in a group of 17 people and can sink my raft in five minutes, you get the money!” Uthane said. “But if you cannot, you have to accept that it’s safe, and if you’re a real man, you should correct the news. That’s all I want. By the dignity of mankind, I ask you, if you prove that it’s safe, publish the results on your Instagram. That’s all I ask.”

Pattaya croc farm licence suspended

A popular crocodile farm has its operating licence suspended for 90 days after photos of tourists feeding the reptiles from a floating cage raised concerns about safety.

The feeding activity at Anachak Chang Pattaya, also known as Elephant Kingdom, could cause a risk to people's lives, said Adisorn Promthep, director-general of the Fisheries Department.

The popular attraction in Bang Lamungh district is owned by Utairatch Crocodile Farm & Zoo Co, whose main business is breeding the animals.

Police and officials from other agencies visited the farm on Friday after a video showing the feeding frenzy went viral.

The rafts, which measure 5x10 metres, are equipped with outboard motors as well as cables that allow them to be towed to safety quickly. They also have chest-high barriers, but many people who viewed the video believe the practice of feeding the crocs from such a platform is still risky.

Mr Adisorn said the farm was in violation of a ministerial regulation issued under the 1992 Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act, which requires operators of public zoos to provide safety measures for visitors and people living nearby.

In his capacity as director of the department responsible for issuing operating licences for crocodile farms, he has suspended the licence for 90 days while the farm improves safety measures.

He has asked the Chon Buri provincial fisheries office to inspect the farm to ensure that new measures are put in place. He has has also instructed all fisheries offices to inspect similar farms in their areas.

Uthen Youngprapakorn, the owner of the attraction, said earlier that there had never been an incident involving the floating feeding platforms. Each cage can bear a load of about eight tonnes but occupancy is limited to 10-15 people at a time to ensure safety, he said.

Elephant Kingdom covers 48 rai in all and has two ponds, one used for breeding some 4,000 crocodiles and 300 gharials. There are also hornbills, panthers and leopards at the site.

BUT ... Pattayaone reports, He selected the lobster out of the tank himself and ate all of it, then he suddenly complained that the lobster wasn’t fresh. The staff tried to explain that he could have changed the lobster from the beginning but not after he had eaten the whole thing.
He was offered a discount but refused and went to the police. Case closed i would think.

Thanks for the info B/F, expensive game.   Here's another couple of gun crimes in pattaya. THAI ON THAI again.
There seems to be a spate of incidents lately of teenage gunmen robbing people mostly females, on their way home late at night, in the dark lite streets for their cash & telephones.

Gunmen Rob Two Women Riding Alone on a Dark Street

Two were in shock and told officers that two young men, aged around 18-20 years old, rode up alongside them in the street and pulled out a gun.

They were told to stop their motorbike engine and one of them grabbed the keys. The gunman then snatched a bag containing 2000 baht and a Samsung smart phone before riding away

Woman Shot as Another Thai on Thai Armed Robbery is Reported

The three of them were on their way to visit a friend, along a dark stretch of road, when two teenage boys pulled up alongside and pointed a gun at them.

They were forced to pull over and were then told to hand over all their belongings.  The two then turned on the women and, without warning, shot Ms Thanaporn and stole two cell phones and some cash before riding away into the darkness.

Thaiga.

I was reading one of the earlier posts you made about asking if every Thai owns a gun.  Many do, but many of them buy FAKE toy guns which can look like the real thing.  I can tell you for a fact that the process to obtain a firearm LEGALLY is not an easy one for Thais and especially foreigners.  The Thai must show proof as to why he / she needs a firearm.  The proof?  They want to see ALL your assets, bank books, Land Chanots, anything you own that is of value.  This is why NO scooter boy or farmer can just walk into a gun shop and purchase a firearm.  It doesn't work that way, especially now because of all the shti that has taken place here and around the world.  If you don't own a house, land, property, etc...you will not get the permit to purchase, and second, the license.

Scooter boys who tout guns, if they ARE real, got them illegally, or they are home made POS crap.  Still, you can never be sure.  No scooter boy, let alone your average Thai could afford a decent firearm.  For example.  Let's take the Glock 19 9mm.  New?  85,000-90,000 Baht!  That's 3,000 dollars.  In the states you can purchase one for 500 bucks. In other words, you can buy six of them for what you pay for ONE in Thailand.

There are also those who smuggle guns across borders, particularly Cambodia. If scooter boy and his gang get caught, and they do, they are in a world of sht, as you have probably seen on the news almost every day.

Sorry to drift a bit off the topic of your last post.  I just wanted to comment on the gun thing with Thais.....and YES, many DO carry in their cars and even if it may be a fake, it's not worth taking a chance.

Cheers.  :cheers

German Stabbed in Walking Street by Crazy Thai Girlfriend

In the early hours of the morning on June 26 the police were called to the scene of a serious assault close to the entrance of Walking Street, South Pattaya.

The Sawangboriboon Medics had also responded and were treating a forty-nine year old German, who was suffering from multiple stab wounds. He received emergency first aid at the scene and was transferred to Pattaya Memorial Hospital.

A large crowd had gathered and were both in shock and frightened by the violence of the incident. A witness, forty-nine year old  taxi driver, later said he had heard screaming among a crowd of tourists and could see people scattering in all directions, running away.

He ran to assist and saw forty-three year old woman, with a pair of scissors who was fighting ‘insanely and uncontrollably’ with the German man. He, with the help of other locals, managed to overpower the raging woman and to take the scissors away from her. Then they called the police.

After being arrested and taken to the police station Ms ----. said that she has been dating with Mr. ----  for two-years and today she had seen him with a new lover so she became jealous, took a knife and a pair of scissors and attacked him in the street.

Reporting a crime to the authorities is not a wise thing to do when your visa has run out - here's a story with a few twists n turns.

The guy made a statement claiming he invested over two-million baht in the entertainment business with some local partners and subsequently lost his money. original story here pattayaone.net

update story here pattayaone.net

Then he was approached by a guy who assured him he would be able to retrieve his investment for him, But it would cost another 600,000. So he then went with the money to meet the man at his black Toyota Fortuna and discuss the matter further.

On the way he was offered a bottle of water, which he drank, and then started to feel dizzy and passed out.

The next thing he remembers is waking up on Pattaya Beach, in front of the Police Station, with not only the cash missing but also his designer watch, worth around 150,000 Baht.

After returning to his hotel room to recover he began to try and contact the men again and after ten days of trying he finally decided to report the theft to the police.

This is where things went from bad to worse

After reporting the alleged crimes at the police station, and providing proof of his identity, officers noticed that his visa had expired thirty-four days earlier.

He was immediately handed over to the Chonburi Immigration Department and detained. The hapless Italian is now being charged with overstaying. He is being deported and will be barred from applying for a Thai visa for five years.

What is a half hour hotel, yes obviously a short time hotel, but half an hour, by the time you've had a shower and got a gallop on, there's a knock on the door, room 9 your time is up. Hardly enough time to get fleeced of your goodies, but in this case there was
at the "The Rich Home" in south pattaya.

Uzbekistan Woman Robbed in Short Time Hotel

Just after midnight, on June 14, Pattaya police were alerted to an assault and robbery at The Rich Home, a half-hour hotel in South Pattaya.

In room S5 a twenty-six year old from Uzbekistan, was being treated for facial injuries by Sawangboriboon medics and officers found blood on the walls and floor.

She gave a statement explaining she had only been in Pattaya for three days and knew nobody at all. Then she met a Thai man on the beach and they were able to communicate with each other in English and so she agreed to go to walking Street with him.

After that she went on his motorcycle to the short time hotel and as soon as they were in the room the man punched her and snatched her bag containing 2000 Baht and a Samsung Smart Phone.

Police officers are reviewing CCTV to try and identify the suspect.

She jumped off the balcony  her “farang” boyfriend had gone off with another woman, well that makes a change it's normally the other way around. Here's the story at what allegedly happened at the Tweet Tweet Nest.

Thai Woman Jumps After Foreign Boyfriend’s Infidelity

At 02.00 am on 11 June 2016, Sawangboriboon Rescue Radio was informed of a fall at Tweet Tweet Nest Pattaya, Banglamung, Chonburi

At the scene, there was the body of  29 yr old from Petchaboon who had jumped from the 3rd floor Room no. 36, and landed on and became stuck on the 2nd floor mezzanine.

She was crying in pain and the rescue workers had to clamber out to save her, apply first aid and send her to Banglamung Hospital

The injured woman could barely give a statement, muttering and slurring drunkenly, that she just jumped off the balcony as she was sulking because her “farang” boyfriend had gone off with another woman.

Perhaps staying at a hotel whose own description runs, “Because a nest is like a hotel for birds. It’s where nature’s ultimate social animals gather to chat, lark around, rest and recharge before flying free and soaring anytime and anywhere they want.

For the party animals of Pattaya, Tweet Tweet Nest is the same kind of high spot. It’s a great place to stay while enjoying the city’s nightlife and all-day good times in comfort with the utmost convenience. Indeed guests are within easy walking distance of many popular areas including famous Walking Street” was not the best of decisions made for that night.

At least she can wake up grateful that she failed to hit the floor.

Tourist Safety Pattaya’s No. 1 Priority, New Police Chief Says

Apichai Klobpetch (middle) speaks to reporters Wednesday night during the inspection of a massage parlor in Pattaya.

The new commander of Pattaya police said, preventing crime and keeping tourists safe are his top priorities.
the three policies Pattaya police will pursue under his command: better roads, policing and safety.

“First, we will manage the traffic, to provide convenience to tourists and reduce accidents. Second, we will decrease crimes. We will put a control on crimes, to make them happen as rarely as possible,” Apichai said. “Third, and this is the most important one, taking care of tourists’ safety. We will provide security for their lives and possessions.”

He is undaunted by Pattaya’s reputation as a place where tourists are assaulted and scammed almost on a daily basis.

Whenever the name "PATTAYA" arises in conversation, it's automatically sex, beer and luvlies, but there is really more to the place than that, if your prepared to look around, some nice places from patts all the way to sattahip on the coastal road.

Here's an article from Orlando Barton of inspirepattaya.com tells you more:

A sleepy little fishing village … where?

If you’ve ever met any old-timers in Pattaya, it’s interesting to hear them talk about “the old days”. My Uncle was in the US Air Force stationed at Utapao Air Base just south of Pattaya during the Vietnam Conflict. I’ve got old 35mm slides from 1968 showing people riding horses on a pristine, natural and deserted Pattaya Beach.

Google “Pattaya” and read dozens of descriptions of this place. Most have two things in common. All of them mention Walking Street and the sex business. Most of them mention the fact Pattaya was once a “sleepy little fishing village”. For those of us who live her, it is hard to imagine.

For us Johnny-come-lately’s, Pattaya appears to have sprung forth from the ground a fully-functioning seaside tourist-infested madhouse. It’s like someone took some “Las Vegas Seeds” and planted them here by the sea. We assume Pattaya was always here glowing in the dark … one big neon distraction.

The story this week’s picture tells is where you might find that sleepy little fishing village now. It is taken from the pier in Bang Sare, a 15-20 minute drive from Pattaya. Visit the villages between Jomtien and Sattahip like Bang Sare and Ban Amphur, and you’ll get the full-on fishing village experience.

Ban Amphur is a few kilometers south of the Ambassador City Complex and is easily spotted by its distinctive double jetty jutting out into the Gulf of Thailand. Every day boats stream in between the jetties ready to unload their fish, squid and crabs. This is where you’ll find giant waterfront Thai-style seafood restaurants like Preecha, Sri Nuan and Tree @ Sea. Thai people have known about this village for years. Now some tour operators are taking visitors to experience the “Ban Amphur Seafood District”.

Further south is a little bit larger and less sleepy fishing village of Bang Sare. Thai families flock here on weekends to fall asleep under the coconut palms, visit the picturesque temple and gorge themselves on fresh-off-the-boat seafood.

Early one morning I arrived at the massive concrete pier to take some pictures. As I walked between the boats I could smell khao tom cooking and hear fishermen singing and laughing as they either rigged up for a day at sea or battened down after a night of squid fishing. It was like being in a 3D-360 degree fishing village movie.

I marveled at the colorful fishing boats like a little boy, snapping dozens of pictures … time standing still.
If it’s a sleepy fishing village you want drive south away from the neon lights. It’s still here. It’s still Thailand.

How can a guy walk out through the lobby of a hotel without being noticed with a 40 inch tv, and a wall mirror, unless he lowered it out of the window on a piece of rope. or was it an inside job. Another "WHO DUNNIT" in pattaya.

Con Man Robs Pattaya Short Time Hotel

At 1.30pm in the afternoon of Wednesday June 1 a theft was reported at the Viva Hotel in Soi Paniadchang, Central Pattaya.

The hotel, catering for short-time occupation, complained that a well-dressed man, driving a Toyota Prius, booked room 13 at around 10am. At 11.50 a nineteen-year old hotel worker noticed the man in the downstairs area and asked him if he was checking out, before continuing to serve other customers.

He then noticed the suspect driving away from the hotel and so sent upstairs to check on the room and found a 40” flat screen television, a wall mirror, shower gel and soap all missing.

He immediately alerted the police who discovered, via CCTV, that the Toyota Prius license number is 1กค 3514 from Bangkok and registered in Bangkok.

The hotel staff are unable to explain how nobody noticed a 40” flat screen TV being carried through the lobby or why there is no CCTV coverage of that.

There has been no trace of the thief or his car since.
