OK CK, Agree entirely.  The insurance companies are out to make money for their shareholders and there is nothing wrong with that.  If I were in the business of sending fleets of oil tankers across the globe then I would want to insure against catastrophic loss.  When it comes to health insurance I suspect that, 9 times out of 10, the insurance would cost more than the treatment. It is a gamble, and Kev seems to have been on the losing side.  At my age I think I am uninsurable anyway. And CK, as you rightly point out, there is always the small print lurking to deny any payment.

My own view is that money spent on insurance is money wasted.

I see your point TT. The whole premise of insurance is to 'protect' against unfortunate events. And soon after came the Loss Adjusters; the people hired by the insurers to reduce the amount paid out and protect vested interests. Remember the 'Lloyds Names'? A great ruse if you had money: you became a 'name' in a syndicate and could offset tax against your stake in the syndicate. All was wonderful (for the members) until a series of natural events (like the Great Storm) called up their investment. The howls of protest were amazing to hear. The golden goose stopped laying. And Lloyds changed forever.

The most important thing to remember with any insurer is that they will try to reduce what they pay out (or not pay at all). They are one of the groups that I always read the small print and make sure any claim is bulletproof. Be clever and don't go for the cheapest. Get it all in writing and be prepared to fight fire with fire.

Hi Thaiga, part of my attitude is based on the fact that I will be 72 next week and have survived without insurance so far. Far too late to start now.  However, if you want to donate cash then my usual terms apply.

Sorry to hear about Kev’s illness.  I hope he has a good recovery.  He has been unlucky at getting cancer at a relatively young age.  I am still not sure about this insurance lark.  Kev’s treatment is costing 1,000,000 Baht which is about the same as 10 years of insurance premiums.  It is all a bit of a gamble.  If you pay the insurance and are not ill then it is money wasted.  If you buy the insurance and then claim for illness then I imagine the premiums will then go through the roof.  My own view is that money spent on insurance is money wasted.

We westerners don't see the full funnyside of thai comedy like the thais, these two guys Lamsong and Hoy Salah became famous almost over night with their food reviews, like dumb and dummer Bangkok style, well it is different i must admit, unlike the same old farangs banging out the same material. There videos range from the kerbside noodle shop to the high class end. watched millions of times on Facebook.  I musta lost my sense of humour as the internet loves them

Thai society generally view foreigners as a good thing for the country but not necessarily for the reasons you think. One can even argue that foreigners and their strange perception of beauty is of great benefit to the country as a whole.

Thaiga, thanks for posting that clip.  I am just reading Anthony Bourdain's book:- Kitchen Confidential (free pdfs on internet) and very funny it is too.  Here is his description of eating his first oyster when he was a young lad:-

My parents hesitated. I doubt they'd realized they might have actually to eat one of the raw, slimy things we were currently floating over. My little brother recoiled in horror.
But I, in the proudest moment of my young life, stood up smartly, grinning with defiance, and volunteered to be the first.
And in that unforgettably sweet moment in my personal history, that one moment still more alive for me than so many of the other 'firsts' which followed-first pussy, first joint, first day in high school, first published book, or any other thing-I attained glory.

I am just about to retire for the third time but I want to retain an active life. I intend to sit on a bar stool and regale all and sundry with my misogynistic, racist, anti-semitic, homophobic, fascist and climate denying view of the world. Clearly, this will involve much expenditure on drink and food which will be beyond the means of a poor old age pensioner.  I appeal to all of you to make regular donations (cash only) to support this worthwhile venture.

I put this clip in  - The great Thailand vloggers war - not in the thread - Have you got health insurance - out of respect to the guy that passed away. personally i liked his videos and so did a lot of people, so if they want to contribute to what they think is entertainment, that's up to them.
But ... where are them contributions going.

who'd a thought it - youtube like a battlefield, has youtube taken over from the forums is that where the new trolls are at, can't believe there are so many haters in whatever people choose to do, i put it down to jelousy. someone gets more followers, so what, they are better at doing what some fail in, that's why. don't the haters ever think about the guys family members having to listen to people speaking ill of them on youtube.  read the comments under the clip on youtube, they are unbelievable, here's just one of many

Very nicely done Rein, Graham used that nice Thai family as actors in his movie and
their farm as a movie set. It was always about him and getting others to pay for what
he wanted.
