Getting these countries into the spotlight of the international community, especially to the attention of people who are usually not interested in politics at all, might improve the living conditions of people living in these countries a lot.

Did North Korea apply for the World Cup? Why should they all of a sudden want people to visit their country? They're said to use other means to get attention like attacking other nations with missiles.

Qatar is supposedly going to dismantle and donate their stadiums to third world countries. Free scrap metal.

It will be more like 50c, not 40. Trust me, I live in Dubai and Qatar is the hottest place I've ever been. Not condusive to good football!!

By the way the living standards on Qatari nationals is very high. They are sitting on a boat load of natural gas.

Not everyone is rich, but those that choose to work there as ex pats are earning far more than they could likely make in their home country.

Still a sandpit the size of West Yorkshire and no good for football, never mind the World Cup.
