Pensioners are being encouraged to practise safe sex after a significant rise in STIs.

The number of older people suffering an infection has doubled in just ten years, fuelled in part by promiscuity and the rising divorce rate.
Syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhoea and genital herpes are the most common STIs contracted by 50 to 90 year olds, according to researchers.
Post-menopausal women are more vulnerable to STIs due to physical changes. And men on erectile dysfunction drugs are also at risk.
Recent figures published by the Health Protection Agency showed a rise in the number of over 50s having sex with new partners.
Many middle-aged folk also use websites to find romance but are oblivious to the need to use condoms. Researcher Rachel von Simson said: ‘Younger people are continually exposed to the safe sex message but older people may not be as aware.
Last year, the Family Planning Association ran the first ever national campaign promoting safe sex among the over 50s. Perhaps we need more of those to raise awareness.
