Kanchanaburi Officials Refuse to Cut Down 'Sacred Tree'

KANCHANBURI — Local officials say they cannot remove a tree that blocks a thoroughfare in Kanchanaburi province because it is believed to possess spiritual powers.

Many motorists have complained about the Bodhi tree, which takes up a significant portion of the road in Thamaka district, officials said.

However, the tree cannot be cut down because locals believe it is sacred and possesses spirits that could harm the workers, the director of Thamaka Municipality explained today.

"The villagers believe that Bodhi is the type of tree that Lord Buddha sat under when he attained Enlightenment. It's something villagers respect, so we respect that too, because we are also Buddhists," Thamaka Municipality director Abhisama Bhodharamkul told Khaosod. "In the past, someone tried to cut it down but went insane instead. Another person tried to use a backhoe to clear it but the vehicle just broke down."

According to Aphisama, the tree was there even before the road was paved.

"The Bodhi tree stood in the middle [of the dirt road], and locals always travel on the sides," she said.

She added that local residents regard the tree as "lucky" because many of those who have prayed to the Bodhi tree have had their wishes granted.

"It's a holy tree," said Siriwan Siriwaree, a 40-year-old resident in Thamaka district. "Many people asked for lucky lottery number, and they get it. Some also asked for success in their life. They say that an elder ghost is residing in that tree."

Hi Thaiga and I wonder if we have another spoof here ?
Was the road laid perfectly around the tree or did the tree grow through the road, quickly, without disturbing the tarmac ?
Respect for our Host country's position on Ghosts - but ?

Hi roger, The size of the tree, indicates it's been there a long time.

According to Aphisama, the tree was there even before the road was paved.

Hey that would make a good thread - The spoof or not thread.  :cheers

Well the road makers did a real good job then, going around that tree so beautifully.
And why would you build a 2 lane road that will only allow a motorbike to pass ?
Cheers.

Thaiga - occasionally I've seen a story about double yellow lines going around dustbins or parked cars so maybe someone did actually direct the road exactly at that tree and then build the road around it, but I doubt it. A good one for April 1st ?

This really is LoS, that's is all you will get, no forward thinking here, no design planning in advance, no consultation with the local's.

No need to chop down the tree.
If some forward thinking local had done it right there would be a separate lane on each side of the tree with markers and reflectors near the tree to warn the Motorists of the impending danger ahead.
But this is Thailand.

My last job was Project Planning & Control, I dont see to much around here, especially at the local level.

KC. LoS is ?
Don't be too cynical about Thailand - as an example, I think Thailand makes and exports more Motor Cars than the the UK or Canada.
Probably more than the UK and Canada together. MMmmm 'But this is Thailand' that's a bit dismissive .........
This must be a spoof or a one off mistake.
I blame Thaiga. It's amazing what he can do with that Computer !

Thaiga - a masterstroke - it looks like a bypass lane has been added to get by the tree.
Looks genuine. Mmmm.

Hey roger there's a post on here somewhere, a house in the middle of a highway I think it's been demolished now though.

Authorities decided to build a road through a residential area, moving all its inhabitants. Family Baogen concluded that the compensation offered is inadequate and refused to move. Thus, the building could not be destroyed, and therefore it was left in the middle of the highway.
