Another popular nickname is Chinese and pronounced, "Muay."  You need to be careful on the tone, because if not spoken correctly, it means dick / cnut hair.  No joke.

Superstition

There are lots of theories for the nickname, one is that people in past generations believed that bad spirits could mess up your life if they knew your real name.

Thai babies don’t get a real name until a monk or a respected member of the family has been consulted. Names are regarded as crucial to the persons future.

Many thais change their names, when they have been going through a bad patch, thinking it will change their luck, of course most will seek the advice from a fortune teller or a monk first.

A member of my thai family is nicknamed Tong (gold) although she has changed her name on numerous occasions they still call her tong. and she ain't won the lottery yet. :-[

So why are some large thais named NOI, if NOI means small

ARR! thats because  "NOI" would be the youngest child in the family, regardless of size.

We westerners all have a good laugh at some thai names, like a girl named porn, then there's a Thai football player
by the name of Terdsak.

Putting the boot on the other foot some thais have a good laugh at westerners names, like the name Jim for instance, i bet the thai people        crack up at this one, because ‘Jim’ (or Gym) translates to a slang word for Vagina  :evilgrin

How about kids named, "Poo, Dong, Porn, Pee, etc."  Back in the days when I used to teach, I once had a student named, "Kukai."  Here's what it means in the Hawaiian language...it's kind of a slang:

Thanks for the reply T/T - toy boy yes that's good. sometimes Thai children are given nicknames after the order in which they were born into the family i.e. one, two, three,  Did you know or should i say, rumor has it that the reason for the nicknames is due to superstition, that by using the real name of a baby might draw the attention to evil spirits ::) Even if the baby was cute n lovely, give it an ugly name and any evil spirits around would assume the baby was not worth their attention.

Where does the word NOI originate from, yes we all know NOI means small and NIT NOI  นิดหน่อย  means
a tiny bit, a wee bit, a very small portion, or just a little.

So why are some large thais also named NOI, if NOI means small :uhm
