I've seen those pics. before. If I have the era correct, girls of the same age and younger were being napalmed in Vietnam by the men they were entertaining in Thailand.

I think so.--On June 8, 1972 together with American co-ordinators, the South Vietnamese Airforce dropped napalm bombs.-FROM the kim foudation,http://www.speakers.ca/phuc_kim.html

I cannot imagine that present-day Thai girls do feel any solidarity with Vietnam and the girls there. Opposite, the war brought the foreigners (American GIs) here. For them it was actually a positive development.

There is just something most Westerners don't realize: that Thailand is a matriarchy, as cute as the girls might look like. When we come here with our perspective of patriarchy we're the losers. Pattaya is full of those buying for convenience.

Most of us up here in Korat have different ideas: we don't buy for convenience, we arrange for retirement. Those of us who picked well do appreciate matriarchy now; it relieves us!

matriarchy-matriarchy as a hierarchy where women have authority over men and men take a subservient position.I didnt know but i googled it,I agree fully when PICKED WELL.cheers thaiga

As the Vietnamese opened up for a life with the rest of the world, maybe we should follow their example. I don't think anybody on this forum gave an order to drop a napalm bomb. No reason to discuss every detail of the Vietnam war and then the details of British colonialism etc.

As I said in my former post I don't see any connection between what happened there and present-day behavior of Thai girls. It's been 40 years. And Thailand went through a lot in those years. Imperialism, the opening of a new market for western products, does have much more impact on Thai girls today.

I was commenting on the irony of the happy bar girls in the pics. and what else was going on at the time that involved their temporary friends. Nothing to do with the present and not intended to play down the evils of the imperialism of other countries.

Probably the majority of Thais didn't have access to other view points than "The only good commie's one that's dead!"

Apart from having to smile happily for their job the girls were taught to believe that they and their customers were on the right and especially the winning side; that they were serving the glorious.

When I was still teaching I found out that the knowledge about the Vietnam War and what it caused in the West is close to zero by teacher students in their senior college year. This topic is kind of banned from classrooms

Is Vietnam really an open society? It is not North Korea admittedly, yes you can go there on holiday, but it is still pretty strictly controlled by those of a reddish hue.
