Thaiga, I think you should have a word with Dawn.

“Proper English Innit”

When we talk about “Proper English,” what exactly do we mean?

Do we mean the English that you can take home to your grandmother? Do we mean the English that will impress your boss? Or do we mean the English that everyone will understand?

A great thing about languages, and in particular the modern English language, is that no matter how hard you try to standardise it, youngsters, non-native speakers and the media will adapt it to their will.  This is only exacerbated by the internet and global communication.  I can whinge that there is no such word as "Addicting" and that the correct word "Addictive" fulfils the intended meaning just fine, but I guarantee that it is used so frequently nowadays that it will shortly be in the Oxford English Dictionary (if it isn't already).

Language is, in the end, merely a means of communication.  None of us speak as if we are reading Shakespeare, so why should the "Yoof" of today be limited by current language norms if it helps everyone to understand each other.

As for picking on young Dawn (or anyone else for that matter) regarding language use; forums that become grammar-slagging matches tend to be unpleasant places to reside.  I would humbly suggest that only those without grammatical fault should throw the first stone (and that will definitely not be me!!!).

p.s.  I do think that calling Welsh people "Sheep Shaggers" (as at the end of the second video) should be an integral part of the UK citizenship programme.  Otherwise it might come as a bit of a shock to the uninitiated, however (un)true the insinuation might be.

Hey Jivvy and Takeitor, I think the Welsh contingent on KF might fairly object to that view !
Slightly worrying that Folks can perpetuate such nonsense, even in good humour, on the basis of a bit of farming around the place.
I realise it's a joke but its racialist arguably.
The Crown can still be mine !

Monsieur Roger, I had the Mis/Good* Fortune to live and work in Wales for 3 years and, being English, was verbally abused on a daily basis for my ethnicity, in ways far less jovial than "SS" - but I got used to it.  I was simply pointing out that when the term is used, it would be good for new expats to know that it is a "term of endearment" rather than to be taken literally.

Political correctness is not always the great bain of modern times that it is often painted to be.  People are probably less rude now than they have ever been and it is surely a good thing to not intentionally cause offense to others.  The problem is simply that nowadays, others are far easier to offend.

Takeitor Bonjour - I am more than a little confused by your first para.
As it is the Welsh that are being called 'SS', why is it important for expats to know that 'SS' can be construed as a 'term of endearment', (presumably it's the Welsh that are called 'SS') - surely if the expats regard the term more lightly, that would only serve to encourage expats to use that term more freely ?
Obviously 'SS' is extremely abusive as a statement of extreme sexual perversion and also with a clear racial application being applied frivolously and disgracefully to the men of the Welsh nation.
Now as for the 'far worse' abuse you received yourself in Wales - I see it as poor evidence that PC attitudes are leading to 'less rudeness' in Society. To the contrary I suggest.
Term of endearment or not, 'SS' is a grossly insulting slur and should not be used by anyone at all, particularly as it has a racial direction, (i.e. to the Welsh).
I don't think anyone objecting to being labelled this way can be accused of being, 'easy to offend'.
Political Correctness, is indeed the bain of these modern times and IMHO irrelevant to the existence of a  level of rudeness which nowadays, IMHO, is deplorable ............
Now. Yippee ! The Crown must be mine !
