Suggestions on Best Broadband Provider in Korat?
« on: December 27, 2013, 08:21:25 AM »
For a new incoming Korat Farang ( with Thai mia in tow! ) I know nothing about Broadband providers in and around the Korat area.

I'm open to all suggestions and happy to consider:

i)  ADSL via copper phone wires

ii) Wireless via Dish / Aerial

iii) Mobile Data

iv) Naked DSL ( if it has arrived in TL )

v)  Satellite

Typically we use about 20GB per month back in the West.

Happy to have a VoIP phone line ( so do not have to have copper wires into home )

Availability and Reliability would have to be our #1 need over price.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated - Thanx in advance.

I am not technologically savvy enough to understand some of the terms that you laid out here.  In saying that I use 3BB for my wifi/internet needs . It works fine for me - the speed and reliability seem adequate.  They just came and ran a hardware into my house and into their provided wifi router.

In that we spend half of each year here, and half back in the US, I brought an unlocked iPhone 5 with me and have a True cell phone plan that offers data/voice, although I must admit that accessing the internet via my cell phone, besides email, seems a bit hit or miss here.  When I am out and about, it often seems that I end up giving up before getting on line.

I'm no expert either but the best service available seems to depend on where you live. I think that in town there is more choice than outside. Wired connections seem to give the best speed and reliability. We have used TOT land line for some years but 3BB cable is becoming available in our area and is getting good reports. An advantage to us with TOT is that we also have the telephone as a backup should the mobile services let us down.

So does the choice of Broadband suppliers only come down to TOT & 3BB?  If any one else is using Broadband I would really value your input..... Thanx

It depends on where you live. TRUE is also known to run broadband through fiber optics cable in parts of Korat. They also ran a wireless service,  very limited in range though, in some locations of Korat. At the time it was discussed on forums it was operational, but also said to be in a testing phase still. That was years ago. Don't know what happened to it.

True Internet.  Cable modem service that is very stable.  3BB also offers high speed at reasonable costs.  Both can be found at The Mall in Korat.

I've got the 3BB fibre option at home which seems pretty solid and is true to the 30/3 speed that it promises.  The biggest problem with all internet in Thailand is always the international speeds you (don't) achieve.  Until this is sorted out, and unless you really need a solid line (for VOIP or fast upload etc.) then you may as well go for the cheaper packages with any of the 3 main operators: TOT, True and 3BB.  The one thing I would say is that the couple of times that the 3BB engineers have visited the house, including the install, they have been very helpful and prompt.

Alternatively, if you only want the internet to use on your own device, you are just as well off getting a 3G sim, which gives reasonable speeds everywhere.  Whilst performance is not amazing, this will be cheaper than many household options, and far more flexible if you are only using one or 2 devices.  I have only experienced the AIS package, but True and 3BB offer something similar.

CAT (building in between Klang Plaza and Chomsurang Post Office) does, too. Downside of those "unlimited" 3G packages is, that you only get a certain amount of data transfer in 3G (7.1 Mbits), like 2 GB, per day, after that is used up you gotta live with EDGE (460 Kbits) for unlimited use.
