So where's the booze in Korat?
« on: December 05, 2009, 09:06:54 PM »
Well today is the Thai kings birthday, 82, thats a pretty good age, but isn't today supposed to be a no beer day?
I nipped down to the supermarket to pick up some nice farang foods to keep me going through these long nights earlier, not thinking about it I picked up some scotch aswell, sitting here supping on some firewater whilst looking for the erraneous < which is somewhere on the page i am doing I just realised it was a no alcohol day in Thailand, or has that all changed?
Any bars open in Korat on these no booze days? Maybe a few beers at a restaurant hidden away.
I remember working in Sri Lanka during a general election, they were bombing the fuk out of Colombo at the time, no tourists there so I was a godsend to any bar, come election day beer was served in a teapot with a nice cup and saucer to hide it from the police.

They still say no booze on the Kings birthday, but last year got stuck down pattaya with the airport strike and was supposed to be back at work on 1st december, anyway had to stay and a mate who is expat living pattaya said we would have to go his place for BBQ because all bars would be closed,we get back into town at 6:00pm only to find it like any other day,so we had a couple of drinks and back to the bars for the evening, this is the one day when i expected and had planned around it,
For the people that love the King so much and i must say this seems like everyone in Thailand maybe the tradition should continue.

The King's Birthday is also Father's Day, i. e. here in the villages there is a ceremony to honor the fathers. I don't think they deny them a drink after having sat through that.

They only seem really strict about alcohol on election day to keep blood from running.

Several years ago I was in the Sizzler restaurant at The Mall on December 5th and there were several Thais drinking Heineken.  When I tried to order a beer, I was denied.
