I need a new pair of glasses
« on: June 05, 2012, 05:33:40 PM »
I need a new pair of glasses , I am off to Pattaya soon and thought about getting my eyes tested while I'm there , and buy a new pair of glasses at the same time. ive changed my mind and now think it may be better to get a new pair from some where in Korat , then if there's a problem , I can easily go back to the shop.  So has any one purchased glasses from an opticians and can tell me where the shop is , and how things worked out .

TOPCHAROEN OPTICAL near Yamo, at the right corner of Chompol Road is where I purchased  glasses. But their way of testing isn't very elaborated. For  preciser results I recommend a comprehensive exam by an optometrist. Might save you further deterioration of your eyesight due to wrong glasses.

If you're using Skype with a webcam you should get non-reflective glasses for not appearing like a Zombie to your partner. If you don't ask for those specifically you won't get them. They don't even suggest those and ask what you want.

Top Charoen. like so many others, large and small, seem more interested in selling expensive designer frames than getting the lens prescription right. I have yet to be satisfied with an optician here.

Just what I wanted to avoid , sell the expensive frames , forget the service .

If you find somewhere that gives you the correct prescription, please let me know.

Take the old frames in and just get the lenses

It's the lenses that are the main issue for me.

I just buy the cheap 199 baht reading glasses from any of the vendors at The Mall. I started at +1.25.

I'd love to settle for off the rack specs but they aren't good enough any more. I need a slightly different prescription for each eye. Several things seem to cause problems with prescriptions:

1. Staff don't use the test equipment properly. I once had two different results from two different staff on the same machine within 30 minutes. That was Top Charoen.

2. Eyes in the same head needing different prescriptions fool them.

3. They don't ask what you use specs. for. I need them mainly for reading but, nowadays, lens for the tv and driving are useful too. Perfection is driving glasses that will also focus on the sat nav. I have only one pay that can do that. I have a pair that is good only for reading and even then I have to get the book up close. My newest pair is no good for the computer or much else.

Around the end of the '90s I went to Top Charoen for glasses. They sat me down in a back room with neon light only and held a piece of paper with numbers in different sizes in front of my nose and again at the other end of the room exchanging lenses to find out. I bought a pair of glasses that I thought would improve my reading view. My far-sightedness was perfect according to them.

Two years later I went for a general check-up to a hospital in Germany, a 5-days stationary visit. The optometrists there devoted a couple of hours to lots of different tests and examinations. Then they wrote a lengthy and detailed expertise with a precise and explained recommendation for lenses to use: different values for each eye, split glasses for near and distance. With that I went to Top Charoen again, asking them for exactly these. First they doubted those recommendations to be good and wanted me to go through one of their tests. When I refused they got me on the phone with a woman they claimed to be an optometrist. She told me to better make a new test here, which I refused.

The lenses I wanted weren't in stock, so I asked them to order. It took almost two weeks. But praise to the optometrists in Germany: I could see very much better near and far with those glasses and had less headaches, less dry or infected eyes, and especially now 12 years after that prescription my eyesight is still about the same, no need for glasses with different values, yet! :)

Bit late to this but the wife's sister runs a place on Chumphon Road - right opposite the Chinese shrine type place. 20+year experience in optometry, personalized service and realistic prices..Top Charoen typically only try to sell expensive 'fake' designer frames with commission based sales tactics, so, the idea of 'service' is definitely secondary...

Hi Koratbob47 -
the shop is called Mr. Wang's, but the shop sign is all in Thai. I'm afraid you'ii need to drag along a Thai speaker just to be safe.. There are a few Falang regulars, but they also tend to have the better half on hand for translation.
Indeed, turn off Chumphon rd and onto Chomphon rd and her shop is just before the Kasikorn bank on the left..(I'm just realizing there are 2 different roads with similar sounds but different spelling..Sorry about that..:(  -I haven't moved over yet..so still getting my bearings..)
p.s. like the forum name..;)
