Hello all: Decent guesthouse/resort/hotel?
« on: July 16, 2010, 08:00:13 PM »
Hello all, this is my first post at this forum.

I browsed through several pages here a few days ago and was pleasantly impressed by the tone of the forum, compared to some other sites of this ilk which turn me off more than on. I'm looking forward to meeting some of you.

Next week - from Tuesday, 20 July - I'm coming from Hua Hin to Korat with my wife-to-be and our daughter of two. We're thinking of moving to Korat for the sake of my partner Nat's family, our daughter's schooling, maybe Nat'll start a business and I need to kick back into a more relaxed, cheaper lifestyle.

So, to start with, we'll need a few days in a decent guesthouse/resort/hotel in or close-ish to town while we look around. Can anyone give me pointers, or perhaps even, as dangerous as it may be, a recommendation? There's a beer or two in it for the winner!

Also, do you guys have an HQ or two where we may roll up and say hi?

Thanks for your time,

Craig.

Hi Craig, welcome to our forum!

I myself haven't stayed at a hotel in Korat for more than 20 years now. So it could only be second-hand information.

Have a look at this topic

Cheers,

Johnnie

Thank Johnnie, I did see that list, found many places on the web too. No 'feel' for any of them though, that's what I was hoping for. I've been in Hua Hin for nine years myself and couldn't tell you anything about places here either, so dumb on me.

What about an expat HQ or 2? Would be cool next week to socialise a little outside of our hotel ...

Craig.

Korat is said to have "teachers and alcoholics as expats only" (stickmanbangkok.com). At least those are the ones you'll meet in the typical expat hangouts; the others hide from them in relatively unknown places. To propagate a place as "expat HQ" would make it target for a takeover by either one or both of those two groups.

My advice is to get to know somebody via this or one of the other forums and meet him by appointment in a cozy place. There are a couple of nice places but as soon as they were to become "expat HQs" they weren't nice anymore. :-[

Craig, how much do you want to pay? That information may narrow the list.

The Sabai Hotel may suit you. The Ram is right outside the entrance.  A room at the Sabai should cost from around THB800 per night unless you walk in without a booking looking like a farang tourist. Get your wife to book. It has a patrolled car park. You can get to it within about 5 minutes from the bypass, avoiding town traffic.

If you are driving via Saraburi, get to the Korat bypass rather than go into town. To do that, follow the signs as you approach Korat that indicate the road for Khong Kaen. Shortly after joining the bypass you will see a PTT petrol station on your left and another just a little way further on on the right. At the one on the right, do a u-turn and then go first left after the PTT station, just by a truck sales room. This road twists around a khlong for a couple of hundred yards and then is more or less straight. A couple of minutes after some traffic lights you will see a sign for Sabai Hotel on your left. If you get lost around Korat ask for Makro; Sabai is in the road behind Makro.

The Ram is a reasonable English run bar where you can expect some decent company and learn of other places to go. It's right next to the hotel driveway entrance. Ask for the owner, Arthur.

Thanks for your help fellas, the Sabai does indeed look fine, easy enough to find and well enough located.

I appreciate your comments Johnnie - sounds like you are respectful of your social environment (applause).

Maybe we'll meet some of you next week - look out for a middle-aged Scotsman with a shiny head, a babe and a really cute 2-year old baby girl.

Tam sabai, tam jai, kaup khun mahk krup!

Welcome to Korat Craig, don't know what price range you are looking at so here are some options for your consideration.

I stayed here before and it was quite comfortable.

(...)

Another place I stayed at and for the price it was good accommodation.

Edit by admin.: link and reference to site of another admin. "not friendly to this forum" removed, anticipating his request.  ;)

Good question!

Can't decide, I'll just have to get y'all a beer. When I'm in town, I'll post a time and place.

Thanks much guys.

To all those waiting for that beer ...

We're delayed by a week ... If anyone's really thirsty, I could perhaps try emailing a jug?

Cheers,

Craig.

Maybe it's just me, but that seems like a lot to get into an attachment.

I'm having trouble zipping it too.

Hope you don't use Hotmail, the brew might go off ...

Update:

We'll be staying at the Sabai from Sunday til Wednesday and I'd be glad to pay promised rewards at the Ram.

Anyone on the forum from Phra Tong Kram - Tam Nop Pattana? I'ts likely that that's where we'll be focussing most.

Looking forward to a few festive days in Korat ....

Craig.
