After Trump hails release of Thai kids, netizens ask: what about immigrant children?

Donald Trump's tweets in response to the rescue of 12 children from a Chiang Rai cave have drawn scorn, with netizens slamming the US president for being "ignorant to domestically detained immigrant children".

Trump’s tweet on Tuesday at 7.39 pm, Thai time, says: “On behalf of the United States, congratulations to the Thai Navy SEALs and all on the successful rescue of the 12 boys and their coach from the treacherous cave in Thailand. Such a beautiful moment - all freed, great job!"

Despite the positive tone, followers of Trump's personal account @realDonaldTrump raged at what they said was hypocrisy given ongoing immigrant detentions in four US states bordering Mexico.

A crackdown on illegal immigration at the US border has stirred controversy around the world for a detention policy of separating children from their immigrating parents without measures in place to eventually reunite them. A request by the Trump administration to allow long-term detention of illegal immigrant children was rejected by a federal judge on Monday.

"Great news!! Congrats to all of the Thai parents who have been reunited with their children," tweeted Holly Figueroa O'Reilly, a Trump critic who once won a legal case over the president blocking her on Twitter.

"Time for you to do the same at our border." O'Reilly added.

On Sunday, Trump drew an avalanche of criticism when he tweeted, "The U.S. is working very closely with the Government of Thailand to help get all of the children out of the cave and to safety. Very brave and talented people!" Netizens quickly accused the famously publicity-hungry president of exploiting the drama, calling him a “PR freerider" cashing in on US-based tech tycoon Elon Musk's vows to assist with the rescue operation in Chiang Rai.

Quite a sour comment from Musk (extracted from the Guardian)

Elon Musk has questioned the expertise of Thai rescue officials who turned down his offer of a submarine, despite their having organised the successful rescue of all 12 boys and their football coach from a flooded cave.  The entrepreneur had offered his help and posted footage of tests being carried out on the apparatus he proposed in recent days.
But while Narongsak Osatanakorn, the head of the joint command centre co-ordinating the operation, acknowledged Musk’s offer he said that the mini submarine would not have been practical for the cave rescue.
“Even though their equipment is technologically sophisticated, it doesn’t fit with our mission to go in the cave,” Osatanakorn told reporters.
In response, Musk said Osatanakorn was “not the subject matter expert”, adding that he believed he had been “inaccurately described as rescue chief”, and should be more accurately referred to as the “former Thai provincial governor”.

I was surprised that arch publicity seeker Richard Branson did not turn up at the cave offering to brand the submarine as the "Virgin Diver".

Here is an amusing Musk article from the Guardian.  I wonder if he is lining up to be the heroic star of the film?

a chap who looks at the concept of using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut and deduces that the problem with this whole scenario lies in the design of the sledgehammer – not enough titanium in the handle, nothing in the way of flashing lights, little use in an interplanetary space mission, no aux socket. Arriving at the test site, he discovers the walnut has long since been carted off by a squirrel

more on that guy with the minisub, shows how people think.

They didn’t rule out using it because it wouldn’t have worked... they didn’t use it because they were already succeeding with plan A. If it had rained and the tunnels flooded more then this could have been a viable option.

SpaceX team met w/ Admiral Apakorn Youkongpaew and members of Thai Navy yesterday in CEI to train them on the mini-submarine. Navy believes it could be helpful and practical in future rescue efforts and will conduct further testing in Bangkok in the near future.

You can't prevent people going and exploring, what Elon did was created a working solution in less than 48h with a top-tier engineering team, if this is PR, it's the most expensive one I e ever seen, plus he didn't ask for all the coverage, it followed him because he did good.

the truth doesn't do if the person hearing it refuses to believe it - if you must detain families, keep them together with their kids.what kind of man would have the law separate families, mums from their kids, i don't know an awful lot about politics,so how did trump become president, who would vote for him.

One mother had waited four months to wrap her arms around her little boy. Another had waited three months to see her little girl again. who passed these laws are not human in my mind

The families who spoke with the Times were reunited Tuesday after a court ordered the Trump administration to reunify the families separated at the border under a since-ended administration policy.

The tearful reunions — ordered by a court in California — came as the government said that it would release hundreds of migrant families wearing ankle bracelet monitors into the United States, effectively returning to the “catch and release” policy that President Trump promised to eliminate.

Obama administration is where that originated from, not Trump....but as usual, the anti-trump folks on the left need to find a reason to blame him.  Never mind about the families who WILLINGLY cross our borders illegally, but do it anyway risking not only capture of their children, but death, and everything else that goes along with border crossing illegally instead of crossing through a port of entry.  Hold the parents responsible.

People voted for Trump because they got sick and tired of the left and liberals.  The country is in way better shape than when Obama left it.  None of the left wants to discuss all the accomplishments that have taken place since Trump became president.  Nah.  Let's do what that nutcase Maxine Waters said.  Incite confrontation and "push back" Trump supporters.  In other words, get physical. Which is what people are starting to do.  Screw loose in her head....same with Nancy Pelosi.  "Trump will never be president!"  Yeah right.  Tell us another one. He'll get elected again in 2020, and I'm going to enjoy the second round of meltdowns on the left again as well as the crying and whining from CNN, the Fake news network.
