This article was in the DM today about someone making loads of derogatory remarks about bars and restaurants around the world.  https://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/news/article-6765881/Britains-feared-Tripadvisor-critic-hundreds-scathing-one-star-reviews-revealed.html

The article refers to a review of the Black Swan in Soi 19.

The owner of the Black Swan, another English pub in Bangkok get a roasting too, he writes: 'The owner has one of those grating accents seen on Puppet shows.

I am familiar with the Black Swan as it is near where I stay when I am working in Bangkok.  I think the reviewer is referring to the brash Yorkshire guy who was the original owner.  These days the place seems to be run by some Chinese people who are not too bad.  However, a high proportion of the clientele seem to be pretty dodgy characters.  There are much better places to drink in Soi 19.
If the old only could, if the young only knew.

One of the treats on a Sunday is to read Jay Rayner’s restaurant review in the Guardian.  Jay is at his best when he is tearing into a particularly bad restaurant.  This week he did a pretty good demolition job on a Turkish restaurant just off London’s Regent Street.  One of the comments on his article was particularly funny:-
“We’d better get the vet in; that cow’s not right.”

Bill Bryson relates a similar experience in his book on a trip around Europe as a young guy. On looking at the food (in a restaurant in... Istanbul) his companion says to the waiter, assuming he won't speak English, "do you use a shovel, or does the cow just shit straight onto the plate?"
If the old only could, if the young only knew.
