The sex trade - Berlin Brothels Reopen But No Sex Allowed

Berlin Brothels Reopen After Lockdown, But No Sex Allowed
Berlin's brothels were allowed to reopen last week after months of closure due to coronavirus restrictions -- but full-on sex is still off-limits.
Instead, clients looking for sexual healing in the German capital will have to make do with erotic massages until regulations are further relaxed in September.

And it's not just the clients who have been left frustrated by the partial easing of regulations.

At the brothel where longtime sex worker Jana plies her trade, beds have been made, animal-print pillows fluffed and fresh flowers placed in vases.

But Jana, 49, is looking forward to next month when she can offer the full service again.

Sex work had been banned in Berlin since mid-March as part of efforts to control the spread of the coronavirus.

In July, several dozen prostitutes armed with inflatable sex dolls staged a protest outside the Bundesrat upper house of parliament in Berlin, complaining that continued restrictions were preventing them from making a living and pushing their trade underground.

Prostitution is legal and regulated in Germany, with the country's 40,000 registered sex workers entitled to employment contracts and social security benefits.

Brothel operator Aurel Johannes Marx has seen six-figure losses due to the months of closure, and now he's having to invest more to make sure the establishment meets coronavirus requirements.

Signs explaining the rules have been pinned in the reception area, which looks like an upmarket hotel entrance with its leather seats and marble flooring.

Everyone who visits the brothel must fill out a form with their contact details, which are kept in a sealed envelope.

They are also required to wear masks -- "just like in the supermarket, in a gas station and in the subway" -- and most are happy to do so.

"What doesn't work so well, however, is that many guests come to a brothel with the expectation that they will get sex here," Marx said.

Strict hygiene regulations will remain in place once full sex is on offer again from September 1 in Berlin and other parts of Germany.

"When you've been doing the job for 20 years and you have your regulars... You can choose who you take," she said.

"If you don't like him, you send him back through the door. I'm not afraid at all -- I'm just happy. Finally!"  ibtimes.com

Sex workers petition to decriminalise prostitution
Sex workers in Thailand have launched a petition calling for prostitution to be decriminalised and urging authorities to remove all penalties for selling sex.

Empower Foundation, a group that supports sex workers, said it hoped to collect 10,000 signatures and present the petition to parliament to help persuade lawmakers to consider changing the country's prostitution law.

"The law punishes sex workers - 80% of whom are mothers and the main breadwinner for the whole family," said Mai Junta, a representative from Empower.

"It turns us into criminals," she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation on Tuesday.

More than 1,000 people had signed the petition since it was launched on Saturday.

Although predominantly Buddhist and deeply conservative, Thailand is home to an extensive sex industry, largely catering to Thai men.

Hordes of tourists also flock to the bright lights of go-go bars and massage parlours in Bangkok and the country's main tourist towns.

Women and LGBT+ rights activists say the current law, which made prostitution illegal in 1960, does little to protect sex workers, while repeated arrests and fines for doing sex work has driven them further into poverty.

The women's affairs department at Thailand's Ministry of Social Development and Human Security said it was in the process of amending the prostitution law and would launch an online public hearing next year, without giving further details.

"We are aware of complaints regarding rights violations of sex workers due to this law... and we are not neglecting their suggestions (to repeal the law)," a spokesman said.

A 2014 report by the UN agency fighting AIDS estimated that there were 123,530 sex workers in Thailand but advocacy groups put the figure at more than twice that number and say it includes tens of thousands of migrants from neighbouring Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Prostitution is currently punishable by a fine of up to 40,000 baht or two years in prison, or both. People who pay for sex with underage workers can be jailed for up to six years.

More than 24,000 people were arrested, prosecuted and fined for sex work-related offences last year, according to the Royal Thai Police.

Surang Janyam, director of the Service Workers in Group, a Thailand-based support organisation for sex workers, said the prostitution law should be repealed to allow sex workers to be protected under labour laws.

"The sex industry generates massive income (for the country), but there is no mechanism to protect (sex workers)," Ms Surang said.

Re: The sex trade - Recycling

This from Kevin Maher in today’s Times:-

The worst recycling idea ever
I feel strangely drawn to, and yet equally repulsed by, the news that police in Vietnam have raided an illegal “factory” for recycling condoms.

They confiscated more than 345,000, ugh, used condoms, and detained a woman who, as the condom kingpin, was seemingly in charge of washing the prophylactics in boiling water (hygiene first — I like that!) and then, ahem, “reshaping” them on a wooden phallus (it’s always good to have a wooden phallus lying around) before repackaging them for that apparently buoyant second-hand condom market.

She was allegedly being paid 13p per kilo of rebooted johnnies, which is surely, if nothing else, proof that crime really, genuinely, does not pay (or it doesn’t pay well enough!).

I have, naturally, questions. Mostly where? Where did she find 345,000 used condoms? That’s a lot of late nights scouring public parks. Plus, how to mention it to your partner?

“Oh these things? Yah, I like to use the recycled ones. They are great for the environment!

“And they’ve already been road-tested, so you know you’re in safe, er, hands!”
If the old only could, if the young only knew.
