Sukhumvit 13-19
« on: November 14, 2018, 06:35:44 PM »
I am currently doing some work down in Bangkok and have been staying around Sukumvit 13-19. Here are TT’s jaundiced opinions of some of the establishments in the area. (Sukhumvit 11 is excluded because it is just for tourists).
Starting with Soi 19, there is an Argentinian steakhouse at the Sukhumvit end.  I have never personally tried it but a colleague from Saudi went there with some friends. The bill was horrendous even by Western standards..but they all may have been a little bit drunk.
Further down the Soi is the Black Swan. They do pints of Tiger for 120Bht which is quite a good price for Bangkok.  There seems to be a high percentage of dodgy characters amongst their customers.  Last time I went there was an American with an extremely loud voice trying to get a couple of people involved in one of his scams.
After that, there is the Beer Garden which is an oasis of sanity.  They have a good menu which is mainly farang, but some good Thai items.  Tiger on draft.  It is quite popular with elderly gentlemen accompanied by young ladies who are definitely not their grand-daughters.
I may be proven wrong but nothing much seems to happen in Soi 15.
This leaves Soi 13 which is the temporary home of the Old German Beer House (OGBH).  The OGBH used to be in Soi 11 but the site is being re-developed as a hotel.  OGBH will move back there once the re-development is complete.  I went there on Sunday and it was full of the usual bunch of customers.  Food is just a stodgy as ever.  Nothing much else doing in Soi 13 as far as I can make out.
If the old only could, if the young only knew.
