odd farangs
« on: September 22, 2015, 12:36:14 PM »
i'm always amazed at how many expats i've met are still living in the past and haven't let go of their home
country,everything reverts to back home.

another thing i have noticed, they will give anything to their thai family, homes, gold, cars, ect. but when it comes to their friends or their turn at the bar they seem to be a bit shy.

opinons much appreciated :salute

Sowhat.
Why be 'amazed' at not letting go ? I'm 68 now but lived UK based until I was 62. That's the vast majority of my life.
There's links too - at 'home' I have 3 grown up married lads with families and Grandchildren, wider family, friends and Torquay United !! So I don't think you should be amazed - people have different situations. I meet Expats who are no longer interested in or visit 'home' and that's ok too. IMHO.
On being tight at the bar - you've answered your own question - these Guys may have spent all the dosh on homes, family, gold, cars etc.

Very true for the vast majority!

'Back home' they had to live with a system of sharing with their own, be it in the regulated form of taxes or the more or less 'voluntary' sharing in a social group. Here it's another system: They "pay" for taken care of, don't share. :-X

I'll go along with the KEE-NEE-EL bit, i spent several hours making good a guys laptop, on returning it to him at his bar/cafe establishment he was waving his thai mother in law off in a taxi which i noticed he paid the taxi driver, he said coffee i replied yes, on leaving he give me the bill for the coffee  :-[

OH! he did say thanks

Yes one has lots of continuing interests back 'home'.
I quite enjoy moaning about the UK - the frozen pension not least. How unjust is that ? We pay for our own healthcare in Thailand but get less than our peers in the UK who might be costing the State a fortune !
On that note it seems to me that many Expats spend a lot of effort moaning about all things Thai.
Good to enjoy the way of life here whilst setting your own boundaries, so you can afford to buy your share of the beers at the Bar.

Why would anyone want to buy drinks for a bunch of boring old farts in a bar? They cannot afford to buy their own?

Many thanks Roger, gratefully accepted.  Why is it that only the English think that it is a matter of honor to buy drinks for others? Can anyone identify any other nationalities that follow this line?  I have been in a few places but cannot think of anywhere.

The post from sowhat doesn't say they can't afford to buy there own, it is in reference to their turn at the bar.

Thaiga, well there is an interesting question.  Are all the Barflys in Korat boring old farts?  Well this afternoon I found a very interesting guy to talk to in the G & D.  So no, but generally there are a large quantity of BOFs in bars.

Dawn I have been down on my luck a time or two and each time I have gone out and got a highly paid job in order to recover the situation.  The very last option would be to go to a bunch of BOFs to get a free beer.
