Durian-flavoured condoms set to spice up Asian market

A CONDOM manufacturer in Bangkok, Thailand, is producing durian-flavoured condoms to cater to the Asian market, reported China Press.

A spokesman said they had started the production of the condom and believed it would be a hit among Asians.

The company is currently producing two billion condoms yearly.

This is expected to increase to five billion when it opens a new factory

So they say

Throughout Southeast Asia, from Indonesia to Vietnam, it is widely believed that the combination of durian and alcohol leads to severe indigestion, heartburn or even death.

Everyone has a story about a neighbor or relative who passed away after they drank a few beers with their durian. There are even news reports of people dying after consuming durian and alcohol, like this 2009 article in the Jakarta Post.

I have been wanting to give durian at least a try while here.  Last night we purchased some via the giant Lady Yamo market and brought it home.  In that we opened it up on the front porch I did not find the smell inordinately bad.

I had a few bites, and while I did not particularly care for it, I did not find it overwhelmingly distasteful.  I have read and heard others describe the flavor and texture as a bit custard like in nature and I would have to agree.

So, in that I will not be purchasing anymore of this exotic fruit, I can mark it off my list.

How smelly is the durian?
