Australian rugby league player Anthony Watts accused of biting opponent’s penis

Watts was briefly employed by Widnes Vikings

In an alleged attack that would make even Luis Suárez blush, a Queensland rugby league player has been accused of biting an opponent’s penis in a game in Australia on Sunday.
Anthony Watts, the Tugan hooker, is accused of attacking a Bilambil player during a brawl in the Gold Coast competition. The reported victim is understood to have pulled down his shorts to demonstrate to the referee what damage had been done, although he did not make an formal complaint. However, an official from the league confirmed today that footage of the match was being reviewed.
Watts formerly played in the Australian National Rugby League for Sydney Roosters and signed for Widnes Vikings in this country last year in an attempt to revive his career. He played only ten minutes of his Super League debut, however, after suffering a torn cruciate ligament. He was released by the club “for personal reasons” three months afterwards.
The 26-year-old appeared in public today with his solicitor, Mark Williams, to “absolutely deny” the biting allegations.
“If there has been any contact made to that particular area of this gentleman’s body, our client apologises,” Williams said, while admitting that the nature of the sport meant that unusual contact could be made. “Whether it is real or imagined, contact can occur and that is a very real risk,” he added.
Tom Marzella, the league’s operations manager, said: “We have to wait for reports from match officials and the clubs involved before the judiciary panel meets this afternoon to review the situation. It can’t move ahead until then. Like any biting charge, while this is a little more unusual, we just have to follow procedure.”
