Free Visas for Tourists

THAILAND TRAVEL NEWS: To help boost the Thailand tourism industry the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has waived the fee for all foreigners applying for tourist visas at Thai embassies, consulates and honorary consulates world-wide.

The waiver will remain in effect until March 2010 and will allow visitors to Thailand to obtain a single entry, 60-day tourist visa, which can be extended for an additional 30-days at immigration offices throughout the country for Bt1,900 ($US56), free of any application fee.

Thailand’s tourism industry has been hard hit as a result of political protests last year which saw both Bangkok airports and a number of regional ones closed by yellow-shirt People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protesters, the global economic slowdown, protests by red-shirt United Front for Democracy (UDD) supporters and the global influenza A(H1N1) virus.

The decision is the latest in a series of incentives by both the government and Thailand tourism and travel operators to stimulate the tourism sector.
