Location for bar/ venue for expats?
« on: July 12, 2012, 06:24:02 PM »
Tin hat on, here goes:

Korat sadly lacks a true centre (excluding the mall).  I am interested in opening a bar/ venue for expats: a comfortable space for everything that goes along with expat life. but perhaps with a slant towards Korat's aviation past - to encourage the yearly (US) intake to attend when in town, but be convivial with or without them. My benchmark is Raffles in Singapore.

I guess I am aiming for a 'Foreign Correspondents Club' for Korat. I have no doubt there are suitably erudite KayEffers to correct me if mistaken.

The idea is OK, but the location is a problem, No-one seems able to give an opinion over this. Any help very welcome: it can't be that difficult!

Going back more than 20 years on this, there have been various initiatives to get expats in Korat pulling on the same string one way or another. The last loud discussions were those about a Korat Expats Club, the formation of common interests on the side of the expats themselves. That discussion had at least one thing that could have been called achievement at some time: the internet forums of Korat! The first and biggest at a time, the made it for five years.

Offers from businesses to get a working community together always seem to have failed in the long run. Not one has managed to get a wider group of frequenters.

Probably you'll have to find out first, which area in Korat is most densely populated by foreigners, what those foreigners' interests are, and then plan.

Your very biggest problem will be that in Korat you cannot count on expat customers alone to guarantee economic success for that slant towards Korat's aviation past. Their interests and purchasing power might not be sufficient. So you would need to include upper middle class Thais into your calculation, namely police and soldiers. To get all their interests served in one place is not that difficult. I can still remember how many Thais from police and army I met in the old VFW some twenty years ago, which was the only expat hangout in Korat at that time: majors, lieutenants, colonels etc. They fitted in!

I'd be very careful about opening a farang orientated bar/restaurant here as there might not be enough of a realistic customer base that eats out enough, and also you have to deal with all the complaining etc, not to mention the lunatics.

If you are going to open a restaurant then aim for the locals (Thais) and if any farang turn up then it's a bonus.

IMO, only someone that wasn't in their right mind would want to open a restaurant/bar up in Korat for foreigners.  :blank:

Korat does need a good farang venue but the advice against it has already been given. The only busy places allow street whores to infest them in order to pull the crowds and farang seems interested only in getting so pissed or stoned they can't get laid. In addition to that, there is the army of self-destroyers on another forum who knock down any attempt to create something specifically for them.

Go for the Thai well heeled market and regard any farang customer with his family as a bonus.

As for location, avoid Korat town for the reasons stated.

A farang owned restaurant or bar will attract farang, which will subsequently kill off any substantial Thai customer base. Thais won't go near an establishment which is full of loud drunk foreigners and it's those who you will attract. "farang kee nok"
