Khao Yai - Palio
« on: May 06, 2010, 12:35:36 AM »
I have seen on the net a few threads about this Italian village nestled in the mountains of Khao Yai, it actually looks quite nice, supposedly no pizza or wine though which sort of goes against the grain of imitating an Italian village, so anybody been there yet?

The Italian style shopping place, I think. it looks very pleasant - and far from crowded.

Who though of building something like that in Thailand?

Here's the website:

Can anyone get it to show in English?

We visited one Sunday afternoon in August and it was quite busy although not overcrowded.  The pictures above show it as deserted, which doesn't do it justice.  Also, I did notice pizza and wine being sold there, contrary to what was assumed in the OP.  It wasn't our mealtime, so all we had was some coffee and ice cream, and it wasn't overpriced.  I was quite impressed with both the architecture and the quality of the shops.  Very stylish and upmarket, and I'm not usually a fan of tourist traps.  Definitely worth at least one visit, but make it on a weekend, so you catch the atmosphere of a busy marketplace.

For a nice drive on the weekend and a pit stop, the place is well worth it for relaxing. The family and I went during the week and there were no large crowds. It's a tourist kind of place for those coming out of Kao Yai. But, nice for a few pictures and a snack. The shops are very small and tourist oriented. The place further down, "SmokeHouse" I didn't think it was worth the prices. a large place with nothing inside with poor service.
For a weekend drive, I'd stop at the village again.
