How Many Farang are There in Korat?
« on: May 31, 2011, 11:23:15 PM »
Does anyone have a rough idea how many farang there are in Korat? I have been a frequent visitor for 9 years and it seems to me that there are many more now than there were say just 5 years ago. Not just at Christmas, either. Obviously there are more and more who are living in Korat, rather than just visiting.

I understand that there are about 60,000 Brits alone living here in Dubai. I wonder if there are that many farang in the whole of Thailand, never mind just Korat.

Do you mean the city or the Province?

Saf, I presume that most will live in Muang, however I was interested in the province as a whole, and perhaps Issan as a whole.

Quite a few live in town and they include the ones that you will see in the bars and other places of entertainment. Others, many more I suspect, live out in the Province. They, obviously, are less evident in town but have their own local haunts.

The one place that you might expect to know the answer to your question is the Immigration Office but they don't know either. Recently, some foreigners living here permanently on overstay and a long string of tourist visas have been identified in Korat town. They will not show on local Immigration Office records as currently resident in the Province.

Local people in town used to guess that there were around 2,000 foreigners resident in Korat but within what bounds no-one was sure. It was just a wild guess with the assumption that few lived outside the main urban area.
