First time visitor. A few questions please...
« on: February 11, 2014, 06:04:04 AM »
Thank you for reading my post.

1) Any recommended hotels near The Mall. 500-1000 baht/night with wifi preferably?

2) What is there to see/do during the day?

Welcome to Korat.  While I am sure the more veteran members of this forum have some thoughts here are mine.

The Korat Zoo is nice.  It also has a water feature if you have children, which is nice after wandering around in the heat.

Every other day I visit Bung Talua Lake for my early morning runs.  It features parallel 3k walking/running and bike paths that circle the lake. There are always a number of vendors offering drinks and snacks and plenty of places to stop, sit and enjoy the scenery. While there are large numbers at 6-7 am each morning, it is even busier in the evenings from about five pm onward.

Here is a website with some stuff that may be of interest to you - http://www.chiang-mai.org/korat.html

Welcome, Harryz.

I'm not up to date with Korat hotels but there's one not far from The Mall on the opposite side of the road.

What to do depends on your interests, whether you have a family and whether you have four wheeled transport. Korat town has little of interest, especially after you discount the inconvenience of getting around the place and parking. Out of town is Phimai with its Khmer ruins. In the other direction is the zoo, swimming and golf at Rooks and swimming and good food at Korat Resort. The petrified forest museum is worth visiting once. Pak Thong Chai has an old silk industry as well as the Jim Thomson sill factory. Thirty minutes beyond Pak Thong Chai are the hills of Wang Nam Kheow. Near to Pak Chong is the Kao Wai area.

I'm sure that others will add to the list. Some may even know of interesting things to do in town.

This hotel is fairly close to The Mall, on the opposite side of the street (the Tesco side).  I was only there once for a meeting but it did seem to be a decent joint.

If you want to splash out there's the Sima Thani, of course:

Hi Harryz,

welcome to Korat and this forum!

If you're into history you could spent a day at Wat Pa Lak Roi in Nonthai, learning about Korat's female ancestors, how they handled the invasion of the Laotian army under the guidance of Thao Suranaree (Lady Mo/Yamo). Expat Jogi recently wrote a well documented story on our German parallel forum about that. Enjoy it in Google-translation (takes a while to get ready and all the pics to load):

Kids you should better not take there! 8)

Hello HarryZ
There is a park about 1-2km from the centre of town called Bung Ta Lua - beautifully kept and with a 3km walking and a cycling track around it's lakes. On the Northern edge of the park, closest to town, a brand new Hotel 'Kranruen Park' has rooms for B1000 ish and it is really quite special - the price includes a very good buffet breakfast. The Hotel has a pool I believe. Plenty of restaurants in that area too. Good luck.

Thank you for all the replies. I found a hotel and will post a reply after all is said and done. I've been in Chonburi for 10 years. Not a drinker or into ladies of the night. I'm early 40s and speak fluent Thai so I want to see if I'll get any reaction from the local lasses. :)
