Did the Romans reach Phimai?
« on: November 09, 2014, 01:21:25 PM »
Yesterday we had some visitors from England so we took them to see the famous temple at Phimai.  They were fascinated by the ruins and explored every nook and corner.  In one dark corner they stumbled upon a large cast iron urn.  On closer examination we could see a Latin inscription on the outer rim:- ITI SAPIS SPOTANDI TISALAR GEONE.  We carried the urn back to the ticket office and the staff say they will get archaeologists from Bangkok to come up to Phimai to take a closer look.  The Romans were known to have travelled as Far East as India but it now looks as if they got as far as Phimai.
If the old only could, if the young only knew.

Phimai Festival and Boat Race was on then

There was also the Korat cat competition, ;) Khon or classical Thai mask dance from the Fine Arts Department, a traditional arts and crafts fair, and other cultural performances.

The highlight of the event is the traditional long-boat races which compete in a race that has been taking place in phimai for many years. Great day out.
