KKU helps develop Khon Kaen into becoming a Green Model province

KKU joined forces to help develop Khon Kaen into becoming a Green Model province.

From July 21-23, KKU’s Office of Research Management joined hands with social civil networks to organize the “Green Heart Green Khon Kaen” project.  The goal was to plant 999,999 trees and honor His Majesty the King for his 84th birthday the following year.

The project launched at the Khon Kaen Hall on the 5th floor of Central Airport Plaza to begin the promotional campaign and stimulate the Khon Kaen people’s knowledge about the environment.

The organizers also presented some tree strains to representatives of targeted groups for further breeding.  Important individuals such as Privy Councilor Dr. Camphol Senanarong, Permanent Secretary of State for Ministry of Interior, and Secretary -General of the Office the Education Commission, presented a special lecture.

On July 21, Privy Councilor Dr. Ampol Senanarong graciously presided over the launching ceremony of the “Green Heart Green Khon Kaen” event.  He also lectured on the “Green Khon Kaen province, the Livable City” before presenting the plant strains to representatives of government and private sectors.

The event hosted bands, art and cultural performances, exhibitions on environmental and natural resources preservations, painting contests entitled “Environmental Preservation”, debates, displays, and sales of products concerned with environment.

KKU organized a research exhibition useful for environmental awareness such as planting golden teak trees presented by Assoc. Prof. Kongsak Tharthong, chemical free vegetables by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Supatra Chartbanchachai, factory waste water treatments by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sumonthip Bunnag, waste water treatments without using the energy by Asst. Prof. Dr. Ratana Mahachai, and motorcycle using with bio-diesel by Dr. Ratchapol Santiwarakorn.

On July 23, the end of the day event, the working committee of this Green Project presented the launching of this project to the Minister of Natural Resource and Environment Suvit Khunkitti to further implement pro-environmental policies and behaviors.

Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kittichai Trairattanasirichai, Vice President of Khon Kaen University, said the activity of helping make the city green would remain a Khon Kaen seminar project for at least the next decade.

He discussed the groups interested in this green project: targeted groups of more than 200 organizations; individuals from the government and private sectors, communities in the city; local administration organizations in the province; youth and student groups from KKU; private universities; and groups from the Educational Office, Zone 5.

This “Green Heart Green Khon Kaen” project was established in 2009, which is now considered a special year due to this becoming the time that the project became more practical and apparent as concrete.

Finally, this event was expected to create more cooperative networks to transition Khon Kaen into becoming the green and livable city as expected.

I remember 10 15 years ago they had a tree planting ceremony in Pattaya and Jomtien, 100's of saplings were planted, most had to be chopped down a few years later as they were planted directly under the power lines, not to mention the root damage caused to the walkways/pavements, still, nice idea at the time :(
