Is it fun to trample upon "stupid"?
« on: February 19, 2009, 07:18:53 PM »
"Hey, we all know things so much better than all Thais around here. They're just too stupid to do anything the way we would like them to do!" So we keep telling everybody and especially ourselves that they are plain stupid, meaning that we're much cleverer. Are we?

Ok, it's true there are imbeciles in the world. But how to know who really is just an imbecile? Not only in thai schools they teach the kids phrases and words which they keep repeating over and over without ever understanding what they say. So do many of us!

Not only the parson in our parish already kept telling us to take care of the less strong. Isn't that a way to feel our own strength - by taking care and helping the less privileged instead of trampling upon them, telling over and over again how low their education standards were etc.? If we really are better educated don't we owe society who gave us that education to pass it on.

I know that's easier said than done. Not everybody of us does have the skills of a teacher. But very often teaching or plain telling is not enough. When we're open, showing interest in and respect to our host society there'll be many who show interest in us more than as plain ATMs. Lending a hand is usually the best way to show somebody how things can be done better. But we're all soo busy!

How true! Once I managed to explain the handyman what I want done and how I want it done he's got no problems doing it so it pleases me. After all Thais are masters in copying. But of course his problems in understanding cannot be caused by my explaining, by my "condescending to his level". Our thinking is based upon standards and norms that they have not been trained to. So my explaining might not be understood as long as I don't follow the ways he has been trained to think. So try to understand their ways first and rethink your approach!

You bet it's fun to trample upon "stupid', if you're "intelligent" enough to take for "stupid" what you just can't understand!  ;D

Now, where's that hypocrisy meter?

Quidquid agis, prudenter agas et respice finem!
