Fresh storm warnings have been issued for the most of Thailand over the Songkran holiday period.

The Meteorological Department said on Friday another rather strong high pressure system covering southern China is expected to expand to upper Thailand on April 11.

It could cause summer thunderstorms including isolated gusty winds and hail throughout the country from Saturday to Tuesday, director-general Wanchai Sakudomchai said.

The North, the Northeast, the Central plains and the East would be affected on April 11 and 12, and the storm system would extend into the South from April 12 to 14.

People should beware of the severe conditions and keep away from unsafe buildings and unsecured structures, he said.

The Interior Ministry earlier ordered local authorities to offer urgent assistance to people affected by violent seasonal thunderstorms that have alreaady struck 19 provinces this week. The majority were in the Northeast.

The storms damaged 1,642 houses, claimed one life and injured one person.
