Students to get sex education

Teachers and school administrators are gearing up to launch a nationwide programme to better educate young students on sexual health as part of efforts to bring down the high number of teenage mothers.

The move follows the Prevention and Solution of the Adolescent Pregnancy Problem Act coming into force last month.

With guidance from the Education Ministry, teachers and school administrators will be given lessons in sex education and an appropriate attitude towards sex education by specialists.

"Many teachers still perceive sex as a taboo subject and believe that teaching sexuality will lead young students to engage in more sex. We need to change their attitude to reduce the problems," said education permanent secretary Kamchorn Tatiyakawee. He said the programme will educate teachers and executives about the rights of pregnant and parenting students and their educational opportunities.

"Every school must understand that they cannot prevent pregnant girls from attending class or re-entering school after delivery, according to the Prevention and Solution of the Adolescent Pregnancy Problem Act," said Mr Kamchorn.

He said students in the past were often refused permission to continue with their formal education while visibly pregnant. But from now on the ministry will make sure that every girl has equal rights to access formal curriculum.

"The future of all teen mums must not be defined or limited by pregnancy," he said.

According to the Public Health Ministry, Thailand last year was ranked 15th in Asia and fifth in Southeast Asia for teen pregnancies. The average figure was 52 pregnancies for every 1,000 females aged 15-19. It was higher than the average of 50 across the globe.

In some areas such as Bangkok, the ratio of teenage pregnancies reached about 75 for every 1,000.

Jittima Phanutecha, coordinator of the Women's Health Advocacy Foundation, said the high rate of teen pregnancy is a consequence of many factors including teachers avoiding sex education and parents being afraid to discuss sex with their children.

The group's research found that 90% of teen fathers are unaware of how to apply a condom, while 80% of teen mothers don't know how to take the morning-after pill correctly.

"It reflects on how inadequate our sex education is," Ms Jittima said.

Back in the day when I used to teach, I once had a student.....older man, and one day he came to class wearing a T-Shirt sporting the words, "Sex Instructor. First Lesson free."

as a regular reader to this forum for many years,i have not read such an insult up to now,as thai being classed as a moron. The term (moron) belongs to a classification system no longer in use and is now considered offensive  ie: a person of mild mental retardation.

I was not referring to all Thai people......If you can't figure out how to put on a condom or  how to take a simple pill (I don't care where you come from)...Then (to be correct) you're an idiot...Feel better now?

Sticks & stones

Hi there, reading your post you are, or would like to give the impression your a teacher, westerner.

Sometimes in life we are influenced by what is happening around us and how we are treated by others, which accounts for our actions.                  Here's an instance.

My thai daughter was late for work this morning, because the bus which was running late never stopped to take her into town.
Now what do you think she yelled out at the driver! Exactly we all have a good idea.

When i'm driving and someone cuts me up or pulls out in front of me, causing me to brake hard, what do you think i call them.

If you are a teacher POKEMAN GO will be with your pupils soon, What will you call them.

Not true at all, because it all depends on who's using the term.  You can look it up here. http://www.dictionary.com/browse/moron

1. Informal. A person who is notably stupid or lacking in good judgment.

2. Psychology. (no longer in technical use; now considered offensive) a person of borderline intelligence in a former and discarded classification of mental   retardation, having an intelligence quotient of 50 to 69.

I think definition #1 does apply to many Thais, not all, but many, and I can show you the 100+ collection of videos from my dash cam that I've been collecting over the past few months and saving on my computer recording the the way Thais drive. This is not an insult. It's just a fact.  If you can't figure out how to put on a condom or take pill then you're dumb, and I do believe there are people like that here as I'm sure there are in other countries too. The same can be said about any technology that exists here, especially cars and motorcycles. Part of that I blame on ignorance, that's because many folks here have gone from the water buffalo to a moving vehicle with an engine without understanding the technology, let alone invent it, or how to use it.  There isn't a day that goes by when some idiot cuts me off, almost hits my car, parks so close that I can get out of a space, etc.  The list goes on.

This is why I put a real train horn in my car.  I got sick and tired of scooter boy doing hit and runs on my cars.  I got sick and tired of the fourteen accidents I've had since I've been here (NONE my fault.) Now when some "Moron," is about to hit my car, I give the "Moron," a good blast to the face of good old fashion train horn at 160+ decibels. I look at it this way.  I'm also doing them a favor, because I'm preventing them from getting in a accident too.  Think about it. Not everyone here drives like that, but the majority do. So in my mind, I call them idiots and sometimes fcking moron too.  My wife (who is Chinese-Thai) calls many of her own people "stupid."  How's that?  Even she knows the score.

She taught me a word which defines the attitude of many folks here.  Mak-Ngai.  It means the EASY WAY out.  The condom post from the captain is a clear example. What does it say on the condom package?  Never mind.  Mai pen Rai. Don't bother to read it, just use the old pull and pray method, or as the women like to do...just give the vagina a good blasting with the butt blaster water hose to clean out all that jism.

While we're talking about insults...how about the word,"farang?"  Many foreigners do NOT like being called this word, and even though there is a polite way to refer to a foreigner (Chao-Tang-Chat), Thais very rarely use it. I don't mind it because when someone says it to me, I correct them in front of every one there and teach them polite and correct word.  In other words, they lose face, especially when they're getting a Thai vocabulary lesson from a foreigner  ;)

*We can also talk about how "guests," are treated here, but we'd have to start a whole new topic about that.

How about a photo of your train horns installed, what make are they? I had a set of "Hadley Bullys" (Truck air horns for the US)on my Mitsy in NZ but have not installed them on my latest ride due to lack of space under the Jeep (here in Canada).

Also I don't think my wife would appreciate the use of such horns, if I do install these I think I would have to have them on a separate switch.

Hi Kiwi.  Here is a link to the kit I put in my truck.  I'll get under my truck tomorrow and snap some pics of how I had them installed.  I had them strategically placed under the truck and up into the body so even if you bend over, you can't see them.  You have to physically lie down on your back and look up under my truck.  I do have a pic of the compressor which is mounted in the bed of my truck and concealed by my fiberglass Carryboy cover.  Here's a pic of that as well as the arming switches which are located just under my steering wheel.  Basically, there are two switches, one to turn on the pump and the other to go from the factor horn to the train horn, which is really nice. No need to use a separate switch to blow it off which was how my last truck was setup. I just flick the switch to the left and viola, train horn...switch to the right and viola, factory horn.

My Kit.

*Oops.  Switch to the right is train horn and to the left is factory. Also, I can hold the train horn on for around 15 seconds straight.  This is due to the 5 gallon compressor tank ....compared to my old truck which only used a 2.5 gallon compressor tank and only allowed a 4-5 second blast.

Sometimes, you can be first in line at the railroad crossing with the gates down while you're waiting for the train to pass.  All the scooter boys gather around you like a pack of rats in a hurry, and as usual getting close as they possibly can to your car.  This is the best time to blow it off.  You do it right as the train passes in front of you because the scooter boys are Morons enough to actually believe the sound came from the train and not a car.

well chaps thanks for the replies.no i am neither a teacher, nor is the colour of my skin white

i will start with captaincraig first:

your remark (we have enough morons already) sounds very much like it was aimed at the children being born as contraceptive was not being used, not at the people failing to apply the condoms or pill. if so you can hardly blame the children or call them morons, they did not ask to be born.

thiga:  by all means have a mumble at the bus driver who never stops, that is natural, but puting the insult on a post in a forum on the internet for the whole world to see,is a different ball game. what with the laws, especially here.

babyfarts: most of what you posted has already been said,if i had that amount of accidents i would start to look in the mirror at myself and question why.

now as for living here:

a lot of expats do not stop moaning about thailand and the thai people, but marry them and some have a family, ok the driving is not wholly the fault of the person when the test is not stringent enough or the laws are not applied.

is your home country more attractive than this country,i think the answer is no,or have you made the wrong choice, thais are stupid is what i hear a lot,but you do not hear of many thais going to a westerners country and buying a home for them,or parting with their life savings like some expats do here. and in a lot of cases they cry foul, even if they parted with their money voluntary, so who is the stupid one.

of course it has changed here over the years and probably so has your own country. the violence i think has increased here i agree,i certainly would not trust my luck too much,as going around with the sole intention of annoying thai people and maybe putting peoples lives in danger with a train horn attached to my vehicle, the laugh might be on you one day.

feel better now

WOW!

You guys want to hear a good one?  As I was just responding to ajaan's post, I received a phone call from my wife.  Guess what?  While she was on her way, taking my son to tennis lessons, a moron Thai side swiped her and took out her right side view mirror, despite the fact that my wife tried desperately to move to the left because she saw this RECKLESS MORON was driving fast and swerving all over the road.  No problem.  Did he bother to stop?  Hell no.  That's the Thai way.  I have it all on her dash cam and she is on the way to the police station as I type this with the video on CD and a youtube link.  You can bet when this MORON is summoned to the police station, all the FAKE Wais will start to come out, and the BS "I'm sorry," etc.

Funny, you mention, "mirrors," ajaan, because it is plainly obvious you don't know what they are for other than staring at your face while you're sitting at a stop light checking every little hair and pimple you might have, whilst at the same time, using your hand as a comb to try and style your hair. Funny. lol

Kiwi,

Here are the horns under my car.  I have them spaced out in four different locations. It would be too difficult to put them all together, but in reality, you get a better effect spacing them out.  :)

Koratbob,

I agree, but if you scroll back, you can see that Kiwi asked me to post some photos, and being the super nice guy that I am, I obliged. It's nothing personal....just trying to help a brother out.  The off-topic stuff started when ajaan came here as a guest claiming the captain was insulting him. I agree with you that perhaps a new thread could be started.

Cheers Bro

I'm not. I'm just sick and tired of this sort of thing. It has nothing to do with their nationality, but I'm in Thailand and this is where this is happening.  This incident is exactly the sort of thing I have ranted about in the past and now my wife is starting to experience it. I'm not prejudice. What I post is based on experience and fact, not opinion.  The fact is, many Thais drive like idiots. It has nothing to do with their nationality.  I have documented proof of that. Can I change their reckless behavior?  Nope, so I deal with it my way.

I agree there are idiots in every country, but some countries have more idiots than other countries, especially when it comes to driving, if you catch my drift. I'm in no way looking down at Thais. I'm just stating the obvious based on my experiences.

Cheers

*This just in.  The driver who did the hit and run on my wife's car is at the police station now denying everything, aka trying to lie out his backside.  My wife is on her way there now with the video footage from her dash cam.  He is in for a big surprise.  I can't post the video on youtube because she was playing some music in the background and youtube said the music violates copyright laws or something.  She was listening to the radio..Good God.
