CHAI NAT - Mongkol Montha places education above all, but the only way he can ensure his daughter fulfils her potential is to make a visit to the pawn shop.

The farmer travelled from Sankhaburi to Muang district in Chai Nat province on Wednesday with a gold necklace weighing two baht and handed the ornament to the clerk at the state-run pawn shop in exchange for cash.

''Education is more important than assets,'' he said. The money will be spent to buy textbooks and other items that her daughter needs when her Mathayom 4 (Grade 10) class begins, he added.

He's hoping for a better harvest season this year so he buy back the necklace.

Mr Mongkol is not alone, as parents in the same financial straits from Bangkok to Nakhon Phanom are resorting to pawn shops as the new school year approaches.

Some schools will start on May 14 and the rest resume May 18.

The pawn shop run by the Chai Nat Municipality on Wednesday saw 250 customers, three times more than normal and already increased its daily cash reserve from 50 million baht to 150 million baht.
